Stories / The outcasts of Fox peak.
October 10, 2016, 06:34:30 PM
So i posted this elsewhere but i decided i'm going to make a story out of it for you all and see what you think, i'm following the rules for the mega RP (you guys should join its actully pretty fun, Here is the rule set https://docs.google.com/document/d/1YMZkkgFhqUavht54wuFj-ufTzAckghhA9ho2IMBomrM/edit i am using.

Meet the members of Fox peak (so named because i spawned ontop of 5 wild foxes) they started with nothing and are out to make a name for them selves and get revenge on the ones who cast them out.

Meet Gabella the shy but talented crafter, Always quiet but always ready with a warm smile or joke when one takes the time to talk to her, Also known for keeping several shivs in interesting places as some men can't seem to take no for an answer.

And this is Galga the ever curious, Quick witted and smart good with animals and people of all sorts, She also learned to read common from a missionary passing through her village as a child which only fueled her lust for the knowledge of old and lead to her combing through many old wrecks and buildings looking for anything she could find, She still buys books from passing traders with any silver she earns and using these has made many helpful discovery's for her tribe.

And now Val demands his mention, Having been the sole survivor when a maddened swap of rats fell upon his old tribe and killed all through disease and famine he was found and taken in by a larger tribe picking over the ruins of his home, Soon after determined to never let it happen again he learned all he could of plants and growing of medicine and of potions he also learned to read the words of old to make toxins and healing salves both and of manipulating the minds of others, Soon after a large raid where his evil concoctions killed the sky people preventing the loss of a single tribesmen he is haunted and refuses to ever lift a finger to harm again as it comes far too easily now, Soon he left his tribe in spite of their insistence that he saved them all and should be proud not sad and has now find a new band in desperate need of a jack of all trades and intends to use his skills to the best of his ability to preserve them, He also makes a mean human gumbo that makes him a favorite at any party.

Then we have Wolf, One of the most feared war chiefs in the region even by the much more advanced peoples using their thunder wands, As a boy he and his tribe were starving and freezing in the dead of winter when they found an old outpost long abandoned with massive holes and burns and blood covering all the buildings and several broken and scattered skeletons scattered around, The tribe though afraid broke into the old buildings in search of anything useful from pure desperation, What they found changed everything for them, They found a large mostly intact building and upon prying off the doors found food in strange metal jars, Food in stranger cloth packets, Moth eaten but warm winter clothing and strangest of all another large metal room lined with strange blue material none had ever seen before, As they pried the door off they found racks and racks of long strange tubes of various sizes and types and hundreds of crates of long thin brass tubes each crate larger then a muffalo, When one of the tribesmen picked up one of these tubes and pulled a strange protuberance a crack like thunder broke the silence and a huge hole appeared in the roof.

Realizing what these must be the tribe soon learned to operate and maintain them and trained the best of their children with them out of all of whome Wolf was by far the best, As he grew older he soon took the tribe by force and using the thunder sticks brought tribes one by one under his rule, As with all war lords though he was soon betrayed and ousted by one he trusted greedy for power, Stripped of all his weapons and left with only the clothing on his back he was thrust out, A few brave souls fiercely loyal to or more likely still terrified of him followed behind to help him found the tribe of Fox peak, He lives now only to kill anything that gets in his way and spends his days leading the people and honing his incredible strength and aim to a razors edge.

And last but not least is Purple, So named due to the color of his face when he sees the sun, Preferring darkness he has spent his entire life living in deep caves carving out stone and metal for his tribe, He is not much good at anything else but few if any can match his skill with a pick and fewer still can match the speed and skill he can build, Even in the light of day let alone in the dark.

What will Fate dictate for these lost souls? only time will tell.

(i wont have many pictures for the first little bit as i was trying to rush the tribe to midevil so i could be where my old save was before my HDD exploded and didn't think about it :/ sorry)

Soon after arriving on the peak of Fox mountain, So named due to the rather astounding number of them that tended to frequent the area Wolf looks around and nods he turning to the others and pointing out the trees telling them to gather what they could while he scouted out a place for his new tribe to build, After a few hours he find's a cleft in the mountain with two easily defensable paths in from one side and a large open area infront leading down the mountain with good soil and that could in time be reinforced, Wolf nodding his head walks to his friend Purple and asks his opinion, Purple surveys the area as the others bring what they have found and begin to pile it in a small cave and putting fallen branches infront of it to protect their food from the animals as best they can, Soon Purple returns and agrees with his chiefs opinion and they begin to plan huts and walls, All while the others watch still unsure how Purple can be at such ease around Wolf, The man they have seen destroy tribe after tribe.

Soon Wolf and purple give the orders to begin to clear rocks, And plants, Val, Gab, and Gal working side by side as in happier times to clear several areas for huts, Wolf wandering off with a club made of a broken branch hunting the local game while Purple builds a large campfire then using its heat hardens some wood for basic hand tools and using rocks breaks flint, and small bits of obsidian from the mountain into knives and chisels, All while softening some loose steel found near a rockface to work into crude hammers, Axe's, and picks.

Soon he has some crude but acceptable tools and hands out the axes to the other's While handing a small bow to Wolf who in a rare gesture smiles and nods while he hands Val a hare to clean and cook, The others unsure how he managed to crack its skull as they are fast and very hard to catch.

After many weeks they have a small but humble village and have been joined by a new member named Croio

Not the nicest person any have met but useful overall, Plus he got instantly on Wolfs good side by giving him an old battered and worn pistol with several boxes of ammo, This making Wolf's pleased enough to grant him a place with the tribe, Though also on his first day Gab had to stick him in the leg when he insulted her, A few days later Gabs sister Tona also tried to join but led by Gab the others decided that when Tona's first act upon arrival was to walk into the store room and smoke almost the entire supply of smokeleaf bought from a passing visitor and being saved for emergency's and remembering both the time she almost burned down the village when she got angry and set huts on fire and how bitchy and lazy she was, In addition to always demanding a giant room with pretty things and swiping medical supplies to get high with or going on fire starting sprees when she didn't get it, Compounded by the fact she was always calling her self a sheriff like out of a traders story book while using this as an excuse for refusing to do almost anything, They beat her over the head with a log, Then arrested her and then threw her out having neither the time, resources or the energy for a freeloader who tends to set things on fire at the drop of a hat and steals medical supplies just because she enjoys being stoned, She screaming she was going back to the old tribe and would get her revenge as she left.

After several month's a small group passes by

Though they don't have much to trade they have a few small packets of healroot that are still viable to plant, So the colony trades a good meal and some old clothing for a couple of packets which Val then plants knowing just how valuable these are to the tribe, While the visitors eat one of them complains about how he has several old books he has been trying to sell for years and is now reduced to using them to start fires, Galga upon hearing this perks up and asks to see them the visitor obliging and bringing them out to show her, Upon seeing the contents she gasps and trades her entire stash of silver for them and runs into her room to the bemusement of all involved locking the door behind her.

Soon after the visitors leave Wolf walks in to ask what the hell has gotten into her and she explains they are instruction manuals for things such as stone working, cooking, tool making, clothing, walls and even weapons of the exact type the one tribe wolf was unable to topple used he looking at her slack jawed in awe in a trembling voice he asks if she can replicate the designs and show his people how to make them to which she smiles and nods telling him yes she can but it will take time to read through the passages and to understand several new concepts then to teach them to the others, Wolf simply smiles and pats her on the back and tells her he is proud of her, This making her own jaw drop as praise from Wolf is even more rare then large herds of Thrumbos, It in fact the first time she has ever even heard of him giving a compliment even to his best friend Purple.

After a year has passed and the tribe has grown and is starting to prosper having survived the harsh winter thanks in no small part to Wolf's skill with a thunder stick and a lucky find when a pirate band attacked and was fought off but not before one of them dropped an old shotgun and a satchel of paper shells in the snow when he fled for his life, the huts have vanished and a small village has sprung up made from one large building to easier keep warm in the winter, even a fenced off field and barn with plans to expand even more.

During this time two new members have joined the band, One a wanderer from the old tribe the other captured during a raid, The first Gawen having talked his way into the camp when he showed that he was as skilled at mining and building as Purple who also took a liking to him, Gawen was also happy to work with the tribes animals as well as haul and clean

The second viper a woman that Wolf knew from a rival tribe was good at shooting and growing was soon coaxed into joining the tribe, Though wolf still disliked her after she managed to knock him out with a lucky blow with a club in a rather sensitive area.

Soon a bulk goods trader arrives from another tribe having some much needed supplies including a small sack of devilstrand spores.

The joy the colony felt at finally being able to grow a source of cloth and the anticipation of having new soft clothing and warm sheets prompted Val to walk upto Gabella and declare his love to which Gabella accepted with joy, Soon the new couple approached wolf and asked if he would give them his blessing and allow them to wed to which he gave his approval the wedding taking place a few days later.

Soon the colony grew to the point they began to have a surplus and build a cart to trade with others in the area hoping to get some of the many things they still needed to really prosper, They even managed to build some ballista at the 2 choke points like wolf wanted after a metal man blew the arm off of Purple with a cannon none had ever seen before.

For now our tale pauses what does the future hold for our slowly advancing tribe? Just wait and we will all find out together.

Now that my lengthy intro is out of the way and that i have managed to play until the midevil age where i am building out my castle now

i'm curious if anyone has anything to trade? I have steel, Mushrooms, Bananas, Healroot and Devilstrand, i also have apples, coconuts, uranium leaf, and a crate of peaches and olives left someplace as well as haygrass, I could really use some new seeds to plant, My cart is alpaca pulled and i can ship 280 materials at a time so let me know what ya want and what you got.

I think that building a spaceship is already that kind of objective, you have to be researching for at least X time and building the spaceship itself costs a ton, so I see your suggestion pretty redundant.

Point but at.the same time not as well with the spaceship you can just grab one colonist or bumrush a ship in 4 days (as some have done) i was thinking more of it requireing one or 2 wonders of the world, In addition to  a few very impresive rooms , and maybe requireing you to live for 20+ years on the planet.

Something like that, As for the outpost comment if you ever get to the point where you can have several of your own towns on the map even if they cant see each other would be intersting to require 2 or 3 outposts and one large city as well to make victory conditions, Could even have it so after you "win" the city stays on the map like current pirate bases but you cant acess it anymore and depending on past actions turns either into a friendly or hostile group to the rest of the map to interact with new citys.

right now the ship is pretty dull in all honesty and is just an end to the colony, and does nothing really useful other then an im bored button.

so i was moving my stuff from an old 60GB 5400 RPM HDD i used for steam saves that was starting to make a weird noise to a new 600gb 15000 and a lot of the data including my rimworld saves decided to be corrupted and unreadable beyond saving so this is my colony now

i'll start up a new one later tonight.

i had also this problem and my miner had a pegleg so going back to base took ages.

i had my builder make little houses for her: bed, table, stool, heater, battery. The heater and the battery(fully charged) came from main base and were the only things that moved when all was done there.
She brought 10 pakaged meals to a stockpile there.
A restriced zone made sure she wont come back home for a chat or for sleeping with her man. and a other zone so the other people dont go to there for chat, a meal or 35steel.
it is some work to get it done but the mining gets done very quickly with a smile.

for ores that are very far i would still build mini-base, but for things a bit out of the base a picnic cloth would be usefull. the problem with table/chair is that it requaire 2 trips to instal so when mining is half done you get bonus

This guy beat me to it, Best way to get things done is to pick your miner and make a miners shack and lock him into it with food a table bed and chair with light and heat/cooling (i usually use a passive cooler or campfire as they are usually cheaper then a battery and cooler) and a wooden horseshoe peg then make a low priority stockpile that is the only one the miner can get via zones to but that the haulers can reach easily again via zones and set hauling to #1 priority and mining to #2, This slows it down a bit but keeps a steady flow of whatever flowing to you, And as you get deeper just move the shack down the shaft with him but leave stockpile in same place or make it one step over low and make a new low priority one deeper then just occasionally add the first stockpile back to allowed zone so he moves the materal to where your haulers can get at it (or if you have animals its sorts its self out.

I do the same thing with farms i put the one farmer in a house somewhat near to the main base with a small to medium fridge then have a large one attached to the base that the produce is moved into from the small farm fridge, Then this large fridge opens into a kitchen which is then attached to a small fride i use for meals which is attached to the dining room, Best way i've found to solve the "oh i'm going to eat a raw potato even though there is a giant pile of lavish meals i need to walk over to get to said potato then go berserk and murder 2 of my buddy's" issue.

My thoughts:

You are what cannot be scripted. You are their sense of self-preservation, their moral compass, their conscience, their guide...

Without you, the story would end at "Now what do we do?" Lol

I prefer to think of it as i'm the little voice we all have when we try to make the best of a bad situation, That they have some small artifacts like a journal with useful information in it that they have from me, That i influence the world in small (or when angry using lighting strikes occasionally) ways, The perception at the edge of your mind that makes you notice something you would otherwise miss, The hair on the back of your neck rising when danger is near, And occasionally a mysterious hand that pops out of nowhere and backhands them when they are being beyond stupid or puts the thought into all the others heads that they should set the troublemakers on fire.

Ideas / New endgame?
October 09, 2016, 06:11:44 PM
So im sure this has been suggested before but i didnt see it in the FAQ thread and google came up blank so....

Currently the only way to "win" is build a ship and leave, How about an endgame where if you last X years and build X wealth with X numver of colonists for X time and actully colonize the planet you win.

Could even take it one step further if the ability to have several towns on the same map trading back and forth is ever introduced and require X number of citys/outposts.

Always thought it strange the only way to win is to leave, Afterall if you have a good town going with tons of food and resources that is comfy a lot of people may like to settle down.

General Discussion / Re: Hot/Cold seeds
October 09, 2016, 09:12:20 AM
Quote from: Langly on June 05, 2016, 07:19:49 AM
Since there so few seeds I wrote myself a little something to find a few. After generating a little more than 200k maps those are to most extreme seeds I found:

Hottest: Seed 82172 at 399, 23 with an average of 35,9°C, 32,2°C in Jan and 39,7°C in Jul.
Coldest: Seed 42615 at 293,299 with an average of -72,1°C, -98,7°C in Jan and -45,4°C in Jul.
Highest: Seed 6595 at 124,208 with 11678m.
Lowest: Seed 47740 at 343, 77 with 0m.
Most Rain: Seed 82695 at 222,  0 with 6290mm.
Least Rain: Seed 650 at 295,209 with 59mm.

The generator obviously prevents real extremes and for over 100k maps there was no new highscore anywhere. Probably a few seeds with equal values but the program only saves the first that got the highest.
I'm also not sure if the elevation has any effect at all in the game.

Still trying to find out how I can give the game the values I want for the map directly. But the code is confusing and I'm more of a Java expert than C#. It will probably have to wait till my vacation.

if you want to kick me the generator and manual to use it i can leave it runnimg on my tower PC when i go to work, seeing as im a trucker it could run upto a week or 2 at a time without my being home, Figure if it runs long enough something will pop up.

I play on a low end laptop. Will the base mods needed to participate change the running performance of the game in a way that makes it more intensive on hardware? I would like to take part as it seems cool.
Edit: I mean the RED mods on the list.

not really i run an old walmart special with a gen one A6 apu when im working and it chugs along at same fps with or without base mods.

that said without seeing your specs no one can give a for sure answer so your best bet is to just give it a try and it it works great if not unload the mods, Also im fairly sure this is dead no one has posted in a while.

Ideas / Raider "decorations"
October 07, 2016, 12:16:01 PM
so seeing as im half asleep and halloween is coming up, I figure ill post a boneheaded idea and see what the reactions are.

Namely we tend to have a lot of bodys so i was thinking of a few things to spruce up the base in a "this place is full of psycos lets avoid it" kinda way by adding items such as heads/skulls on stakes, Cages with dead bodys hung from doors, Or hanging them from trees, perhaps tying them to a cross untill they starve to act as raider scarecrows.

Positives could be -5 to -20 mood on raiders,
Small mood boost to colonists with bloodlust canibal or psycopath traits, And perhaps ward animals away from fields in X radius, Maybe even a small buff to traders at war with X faction.

cons could be a medium debuff for normal colonists, a small chance to enrage raiders to the point they wont stop attacking until all dead or tiny chance to spark huge double size raids, and maybe a small chance to attract hungry preditors and give them a manhunter debuff when eaten, and could give a -5 to -10 debuff to non psyco/canibal/bloodlust traders and raise prices a bit.

Granted im a bit of a sadist and want more creative ways to tortu......err use the fallen and living of my enemys in intersting and useful ways.

Sorry if this has been brought up before but i still want my tribals to be able to spike the heads of the enemy and scare them shitless and figured i would put the idea out there before i crash.

p.s forgive my poor spelling/grammer my brain is half fried from a 16 hour shift (yay trucking /sarcasm) and ill fix it when it dosent feel like my eyeballs have been popped out rolled in metal shavings and sandpaper grit then replaced backwards by a drunk surgon with palsy.

General Discussion / Re: Charge rifles are too common
October 06, 2016, 12:29:55 PM
my question is why do we assume that glitterworlds are common? i would think modern (i.e real life) level tech + or - a few years is more common, i think i read someplace that glitterworlds were quite rare infact as most worlds tended to either regress due to resource lack/lack of skilled people or bombed them selves back to the stone age.

sure CR would find there way to the open market any weapon will but we can make a few safe ASSUMPTIONS based on cannon, First glitterworlds are advanced and very low crime and most peoples needs are met so few people would wish or need to own a weapon so they wouldnt be all that common for john doe to own in most cases, Second glitterworlds do fail and go to war so some weapons on the market is obviously going to happen, Third some glitterworlds may be happy to trade weapons but others wont due to culture.

I think the problem is we can make them and power armor at a work bench easily, what we need to have happen is make them rare and very expensive and if you do craft them or power armor you need special parts from traders to finish them and make them work.

this would slove a lot of the CRs problems, Though this would still leave a lot of the other issues woth other weapons that were told are being worked on.

Good. Let him have that "accident" and then deal with the negative mood as a result. Plus, you're one potentially productive member down.

There doesn't need to be a positive to offset this, just like there isn't a positive for pyromania, psychic sensitivity, or ugliness.

Insert dealwithit.jpg here.
perhaps but id prefer to avoid a sheriff like trait and eating up meds is pretty bad on its own though i still think it should have at a minimum a negitive social of between 30 and 100 for reasons above, seeing as you dont tend to have a steady stream of non herbal meds and such until the end of year 1 to middle of year 2 and thats only if rng dosent decide to troll you this can be a colony killing trait if he just takes meds and you get a breakout of malaria for example, ive lost pawns to it when i have a low skill doctor and only herbal meds more then a few times even with good beds and round the clock watchimg them.

Its much easier to deal with one pawn dead then it is losing half your colony to malaria or sleeping sickness because that one pawn wanted meds, medigating one death is easy i do it a lot when raiders come and kill someone so i tend to keep smokeleaf and a small beer stash for super bad days then you add on burrying said pawn and its pretty easy to manage the loss of one.

mid to late game one hydro could be managed easily but just like pyro and a few others is going to be a nightmare or even colony killer early game if your not careful, that said if he goes and lays down for treatment and dosent need any it would be amuseing to use my log o psychiatric care to give him a ligitimate reason to be in said bed.
