First time back since A6 or A7 and boy a lot has changed. My number 1 most hated enemy is ColdSnap/HeatWave.

After a lot of trial and error learning the new systems, here is a very utility-oriented colony.

Here is the farm where I get my resources and energy. Pretty boring, but its efficient and lets me worry about other things. maintaining the crops is a handful but having a plot for each type of growable plant is fun to explore and it lets my pseudo-OCD have fun organizing everything (note the sorted stockpiles for individual meat and vegetable types in the giant freezer, then). Also, Dat surplus

The sorted edibles are frozen next to the kitchen with a little fridge unit to store cooked meals and beer. The rec room has a brewery next to the hops section of the freezer and some billiards tables for fun times. North of that, is the military medical ward containing weapons, medical beds and medicine. On the west side is the production area where materials are sorted in their individual stockpiles and excess materials and manufactured products are sorted and stored next to trade beacons in the northern room.

This is the barracks. Its not too fancy. I'm venting all rooms into the hall and then shoving an assload of coolers to blow heat into the unroofed clearing inside the mountain. This clearing also contains my trade beacon for storing silver and has a geothermal to the south off-screen.

And here is the whole colony. The northern side faces the open world and the turrets can be used to manually hunt game so my colonists don't have to. I originally built it to stop raids, but the moment i finished it, all the raids turned into sages anyway. there is a prisoner facility where I extract raider organs and then drag them into the butchering room to get their meat and leathers.

And that's it! Any advice? I still kind of don't know how everything works.

I have not had a chance to check out the new alpha yet, but a suggestion is that when you click "build wall," a radial or drop down menu appears as long as your mouse is held down. You can then select material and release mouse. That sets the wall type and if you just click (not dragging onto radial or dropdown) it will just select the last used type. then just have the default type be set to wood or something.

sounds like a campfire could just be a hopper that produces light as long as there is wood in it and slowly consumes wood inside it.

At some point, we'll be able to capture centipedes and strap legless colonists to them in place of their guns.  :P

or dead marines.

Here is something Ive been trying on my current build.

the wall at the bottom hides the turrets until raiders get close and when they are in range, the colonists can pop out from behind the doors and start shooting.

They get cover by peeking out of the doorway and I think they get a bonus for being in darkness while enemies are in the light. The butcher tables prevent enemies from storming in.
This has worked somewhat decently. colonists can duck back inside the doors to avoid explosive shells from centipedes, and beds are right there for people who need treatment.

I think the combat slow-down is good, as it lets you know that bad things are happening. however, the fact that it locks the game speed I think is one problem.

I think it should slow down the game like it currently does, but allow you to change the speed back if you want.

Outdoor bases are fine if you can locate it near a natural choke point or surround yourself with a stone wall. the rest is about carefully planning your building placement so you can create good cover. one good method is a hallway of doors. If the entrance of your base has a hallway of doors, you have some good cover and a place to fall back for early game defense.
Example:

= stonewall
- door
                   ==-==-==-==-==-==-==
ENTRANCE
TO BASE
                   ==-==-==-==-==-==-==

colonists can use the doorways as cover and as enemies approach, they can fall back to doors further back.

add crap in the hallway to slow enemies down.

Although I do like the new health system very much because of reasons already mentioned in many other threads, I just got two absolutly ridiculous old wounded starting colonists.

I plan to name this colony "Hohle-in-toe".

I think Ive seen your colonists on TV

I believe it is the sum of the value of all your structures and everything that you have in your stockpiles. it could involve other factors too but I think that is the main.

I liked this mechanic.
The guy who dragged incapacitated colonist moved slowly, thus I was able to chase him down and rescue the prisoner.
This. They also dont retaliate while dragging

all the more reason to perfect your defense strategies to keep them from such a horrid fate

thats probably because they are two different raider factions that happened to attack you at the same time. each faction has different relationships with other facitons. I assume pirate factions are probably hostile to everybody.

honestly I love it when this happens. the free gear really helps me out when Im stuck with peashooters and people come at me with rifles.
