Ideas / Vending Machines
November 07, 2013, 04:24:59 PM
Vending machines cost a lot of metal, but do not take up much electricity. They dispense treats (like crisps/chips, chocolate bars, fizzy drinks, etc). However, the supplies for them need to be supplied from trading vessels. The supplies come in the form of 'junk food'.

These increase colonist's happiness and may even cancel the negative effect from nutrient dispensers.

All of your pictures are broken, for me at least.

Hmm, I seem to be having this problem from time to time as well, but not with my ones. That sucks, it took ages to put all of those together : (

Maybe it'll take a while to process or something.

Stories / Hendricksville and It's Gory Demise

RIP Commissar Hendricks

We Miss You... Kind Of :(

So, this was my first go on Cassandra. Not Kassandra. Classic is best, or so I thought. I started with Hendrick, Commissar, McBooney, Entrepreneur and Ware, Oaf. I assigned McBooney and Hendrick to mining and construction, while Ware did hauling and farming. I think having such a skilled farmer (level 10) really helped. My first raid went smoothely, we captured a pirate called York who had a level 11 shooting skill, she was a marine before joining the ways of piracy apparently. Shortly afterwards I had a crop blight, but it wasn't a problem as I had nearly 2000 food already.

After a raid by a female grenadier (I forget her name; she died) I set up a geothermal generator with a turret for my future plans of digging into the mountain for hydroponics and an armoury. Then I researched carpet making and was beginning to upgrade the colony. Things were looking up...

Right click, then click on 'view image' for full picture

And then bad stuff started to happen. Five heavily armed raiders arrived, with two pistols, a Lee Enfield, a Pump Shotgun and frag grenades. I got ready. York and Hendricks were already equipped with pistols, but I knew I was heavily outnumbered weapon-wise. I equipped McBooney with frag grenades I salvaged from the previous raider mentioned.

And then, seconds before they attacked, a message popped up. I was hoping maybe somebody was joining my colony? That would be helpful to have some extra hands.

Oh no.

'A local muffalo has gone mad and will attack anyone it sees!'. And before you could say 'Well dammner bollocks and jumbo buggers' (Watch Red Dwarf) the raid began. It was sunset and my people were tired. I let Ware sleep, I wanted her as a last resort for repairs or melee (if we're in deep crap). Everyone gets into position around the geothermal generator's defenses... And we immediately get casualties. Hendricks and York are down, and now it's only McBooney with her crappy grenades. York was down because she tried to rescue Hendricks. I was not going to make the same mistake. Then Hendricks bleeds to death. But the battle must go on...

I order McBooney to pull back and try to repair the turret. She's injured, and I see it's a losing battle. Again, I order her to pull back. She makes it to her bedroom. I'm going to give her some rest and try to let Ware take over for a bit, maybe rescue York...

Unfortunately the evil muffalo has reached us and is trying to break down the door. I draft McBooney once again, but she's too injured to move even slowly; she crawled out of bed. I give up on that. The night passes as the raiders start to burn things down and blow stuff up; two of my three turrets are now down, I see that they've killed two raiders though. I get McBooney up to the Northmost turret, being persued by the evil muffalo. Ware comes out and draws it away...

It's sunrise now. A night of terror and loss. McBooney is down, shot by Jenkins. The evil muffalo is attacking Ware, who has nothing but her soil-ridden fists. York dies. I'm surprised she made it this far.

Ware is my last hope, but already it's too late. She's on the ground. Well, my colony is finished, but I can still have my revenge...

Amazingly, the evil muffalo kills Prince (who killed Hendricks, damn him to hell!) and the last raider, Jenkins, who killed McBooney, flees. So in the end a muffalo ended this gory battle. Ware is still alive. The last of this failed attempt. She dies at around 11h.

After that... well, perhaps this wreck was found. By pirates? By other crashers? Maybe, when these godforsaken rim worlds are finally civilized, a new wave of colonists will find this. A monument to hope.

In Summary

I lasted eight days on Classic Cassandra. Conclusion: I suck at this game.

Thanks for reading.

Actually, I've found that if they're happiness goes to, like, 2% (or of course the loyalty goes too low down) then they start wandering about. Even if they're still loyal, they're just so unhappy they don't do tasks as consistently and wander away. Remember to keep their rooms carpeted, well lit and big (and I mean like 6x6 or more) and then hopefully this behavior will stop?

That's my experience, but it could well just be a bug. Check everything, 50% of the time it turns out it wasn't a bug : P

Could add a morale bonus to the colonists if you let them live among you as pets - The kicker being that they will change/turn into something more fearsome (at chance or guaranteed) when a specific lunar/solar event showers the surface (Kind of like space werewolves...except fluffy and cute most of the month)
...

Isn't that from Startopia too?  ;)

You're thinking of the Garbage Beasts, they are cute little things to start with then they start eating trash and OMG THERE'S A GIANT BLACK SHELLED BEAST EATING EVERYONE.

God I love StarTopia. Shame it crashes so much on newer platforms : (

multiple game levels like in Dwarf Fortress.

That's VERY expensive, as mentioned before. These are cheap ideas, like reskins and basic buildings/structures for example. Anyway, I personally prefer not having the Z-levels, I think (as somebody else said before) it means you can focus more and management is easier.

Just role play it guys.

As I said, it's nit-picking considering how good the back stories are anyway. :3

I don't like illness... but a proper medical system would be nice, give the 'doctoring' task a bit more depth than bring nutrient paste to a bed : P

I thought he said it was possible, but it would only become a possibility in the beta stage of the game. I'm not sure how it would work out though... Digging underground would be cool, I guess, but then again you could also build upwards, giving new defense possibilities that might un-balance the game.

Well, when modding becomes popular somebody will probably make it into a mod : P

Ideas / Re: Colony types and local humanoids
November 07, 2013, 09:15:48 AM
I do not like the 'missions' because I think the point of RimWorld is that your colony is far from civilization and that you're on your own. The trading ships are the only reach from the civilized parts of the galaxy. Surely if your colony became an outpost or a hotel you'd just become a major town and no longer isolated and fighting for survival.

However, I think bars/pubs are a good idea, generates cash and increases passing travelers. If they're close enough to the colony they'll come to the bar and may want to join the colony. But tourism/civilization wise, I think that's the limit, really :|

Just remember this isn't a city builder.

That's the last straw! Google has destroyed the comment section, now it's facebook! Now I HAVE to upgrade to this google plus rubbish where I CAN'T ACCESS MY INBOX! And now, replies don't work! YOU CAN'T SEE REPLY CHAINS ANYMORE IN COMMENTS! I thought the insane idea of removing video responses was too far, but this has crossed a line!

The comments and inbox system were fine, but oh no, google has to mess it up! What is it with google and fucking everything up in their path?

Many YouTubers who've been around before all this google plus carry on have been saying it's no longer about a creative community, it's all about individual people who want to talk about themselves. Who cares!?

So, google's rip-off of facebook has leaked into YouTube now and we're all doomed. Out with creative, original, political videos, in with unoriginal talentless let's plays and 'vlogs'!

Not to say all Let's Plays are crap, but too many of them are in my opinion.

As you can tell I'm furious about this development. Google is just so damn GREEDY! :'(

Rest in peace, YouTube creative community. You were good while you lasted.
