It has done wonders for me.

General Discussion / Re: To RNG or not to RNG

I'm thinking about how to handle this sort of thing. Thought it may be worth discussing. Questions to consider:

1. Should the game have a such a thing as bad luck outcomes that's not induced by some obvious, non-pressured, voluntary player decision? Or should I make a universal design standard that nothing bad ever happens unless the player actively induces it or makes some clearly-traceable mistake to cause it?

I believe in the former, but with the proviso that careful planning should play a role in mitigating losses and perhaps decrease the chances of certain bad events occuring.

This is already extant in the game's design, IMO.

Quote
2. Should I just ignore some classes of player feedback as simply not linking up with what RW is? Are some players worth leaving alone to try to make a game that's different from the usual assumptions? Even if it leaves them pissed off because they intepreted a story generator as if it were a skill test?

Not entirely. I don't believe you should abandon what this game is meant to be, but you should still consider criticisms.

Perhaps telegraphing in-game what one can expect could help. I think the difficulty descriptions are a good example of something you've already implemented that fits this idea.

Quote
3. Should players be able to consistently avoid losing people/resources even at high difficulty? At any difficulty?

At higher difficulties, I don't think so; however, on lower difficulties, I think it's quite reasonable that if a player makes the right decisions, they should be able to get by without drastic loss.

Quote
4. Is there a way to set expectations (relative to the whole game, or relative to a given difficulty level) to encourage players to accept some degree of randomness to game outcomes? Or will they always reject this randomness and demand to be rewarded in accurate proportion to their skill/effort?

It's hard to say. I think there will be some expectation of the latter, as that's how most game's work.

Again, I think telegraphing what to expect, and essentially setting the tone will help.

This does give me an idea, though. Perhaps there could be a storyteller more tailored to the "skill test / reward" system you brought up. One that, rather than creating some harrowing tale, is more geared towards a playstyle of challenge and reward where the outcomes are more proportionate and consequential of player actions.

I also like the idea brought up that perhaps there could be more positive rng. We already have some of this of course. Basically, give the stories generated some ups, allow the ability for things to go good. It seems things go bad quite often, and they get worse until you're off the planet or dead. A story of course needs struggle, it needs stakes, but it mitigates itself if things are always going to shit and the player knows what to expect.

Of course, there should be leeway for higher difficulties to be masochistic, and for Murphy's Law to be a given, but maybe easier difficulties could generate more positive stories. Of course, reworking / new storytellers could achieve this too, rather than having that tied to difficulty alone. For example, Phoebe could possibly be inclined towards more positive stories, meanwhile Cassandra can keep things consistently harrowing.

I stand corrected.

Showing Rimworld on the news and saying it will warp children's minds is like showing a chess set wherein all the pieces are naked men and saying "Look at these black and white chess pieces knocking each other over. They are engaged in interracial homoerotic behavior! It's going to turn all the children gay."

You kid about the chess thing, but I had a TRAGIC incident playing the game once. I can't even handle checkers, it's too similar, I cry every time.

We must put a stop to the rape fantasy known as "chess".

As for bad press, in an era that political correctness is agree to being called a "mean, mad, white man", I believe that Rimworld should not be thrown to some jornalist to be said "This game is a mysoginist, rapist drug filled training for the alt-right to assert their white privelage."

I find the mention of mysoginy funny, because there already was an article claiming that.

Clearly a top choice, surely one for the short list.

A lot can happen with a good smokeleaf joint and some stuff on a table  ;)

On another note, there apparently are telecommunications on Rimworlds. So in theory that could play a role with the advanced research table. E.G. collaborating with other researchers, or perhaps access to some sort of network.

hey there, nice to see you back

it might seem a really anime thing to say, but, it's amazing how much this useless topic connected few people, i mean even if we don't say much besides numbers, the same faces appear for some time now, longer than my usual friends, honestly

I've made 8204 lifelong friends thanks to this thread. No kidding.

Outside of being potential slaves if you don't mind starting wars, they're pretty innocuous.

It would be nice however if we could actually do something with them, as opposed to them wandering about. When people visit my house, they usually aren't here just to pace in my hallway, contrary to popular belief.

It's all a sham, they're snake oil salesman. There's absolutely *zero* proof that came from a glitterworld.

Caniving bastards.

I came around to it, an Tynan has a point. It makes sense to say that a Glitterworld has ultratech medicine, but it would just be redundant to say that Glitterworld medicicine came from a Glitterworld. Besides, getting it on a Rimworld means that this "glitterworld" medicine is also on Urbworlds, Midworlds, Disneyworlds, Glasswords, etc. Not so specific now, huh?

I'm trying to imagine what Disneyworld medicine would be like...

Doc : Do you want a Duck Tales bandaid or a pretty princess?
Patient : Are you serious? I'm bleeding out!
Doc : Oh my, somebody's being a fussy britches, how about Mickey Mouse?
Patient : God damn it! I'm missing an arm!
Doc : Okay, we'll just go with Donald Duck. *applies bandage*
Patient : You can't be serious...

Granted. Everyone realizes that there is no reason to continuing the thread however, and as such just stop responding to it.

I wish this damn sunburn would go away.

Granted, however Libera is a choir, not a geographical location or state; Your attempts to bring your boat wherever they perform proves futile, so you have to either take the bus or call a cab, which ultimately costs you the $10 you intended to pay the fisherman. You do have a new boat though, so enjoy your weathered log raft. A word of caution, it might not be seaworthy.

I wish I were good at drawing.

In general, I would like for more interesting interfactional relations, both in how the player interacts with them, and in how they interact with eachother.

Making the world more alive would be something I'd also like to see. This could just be subtle things one can find out in the world that imply it has a history, that other factions interact, etc. Kind of like how geographical features are named. Maybe there could be art descriptions generated that recount an event that occured at one of the npc colonies when you buy things. Maybe books or scrolls could be added for the purpose of generating texts that make an account of some event.

In general, I would like something of a framing device using the world around the player's colony, to better tie in the game world with the storytelling aspects of the game. Right now I feel things are too centered on the player and their colonists, and that the larger world outside the player's colony is somewhat vague and underdeveloped. We seem to see little of what is going on in the rest of the world.

So basically an "any publicity is good publicity" sort of idea, in line with the idea of advertising through sparking controversy?

I don't know. I think the unfiltered and extreme stuff that happens is what makes this game great, so it makes some sense from a marketing perspective, but I wouldn't want to perpetuate the crusading against everything that might be "offensive".

people dying. blood carpets. prisoner abuse. animal cruelty. randpm acts of violence towards minors. nudity. public sexy timey. homosexuality. "fornication". cannibalism. art from the parts of dead people. starvation. people living in their own dirt (in some mods). being forced to tragically fight your family members to the death. stealing organs of incapacitated visitors. producing and selling hard drugs to inigenous people. and worst of all: real. fur. coats.
You forgot to mention force feeding drugs and alcohol to menial laborers to keep them complacent with the pointless toil and struggles of life. Maybe that hits too close to home for you?
btw, i LOLed at "selling hard drugs to indigenous people".

p.s. I know it's you Anderson Cooper. Go ahead "patoka". Tell your liberal media buddies about Rimworld. See if I care.

This got strangely political o.O
