Yeah I had neglected upgrading my weapons for a while since my turrets were wiping out everything. Got lucky and had a huge plasteel deposit near my base and I was able to build a nice defense perimeter. They were wiping out any raid well before it got close to me. Even wiped out a pack of mad elephants.

The solar flare really hurt me. My base is fairly large (for me) and had nothing to defend it with once the turrets went down. Note to self...do not put your best crafters and doctors in front lines. Lost half my colony to a raid. And then the pyschic ship landed and thought that was the final straw for me.

Oh I could have moved on but found a sweet valley with a very narrow opening...easily defendable (if you're not an idiot like me) and even has a good sized hidden valley with no openings to the outside, perfect for all your turbines and panels...only missing a geo-thermal. ...and dammit, it's me home and no tribal scum or mechs are gonna make me leave :P

Already had my 'oh sh!t' moment. Just before the pyschic ship I got raided by about 12 tribals, mostly with rifles. I had grown way too reliant on my turrets and didn't properly prepare for it. Unfortunately I had a solar flare occur about same time and I ended up losing my only 2 crafters.

Only got one guy with at least a 2 in crafting and it's depressing watching him craft shoddy after shoddy clubs...Not much hope he'll do any better making assault rifles and I can't afford wasting materials on him crafting poor ones...Hoping all the limestone clubs will finally pay off and he'll become at least competent soon. (got a lot of limestone for him to practice on)

Either that or get another crafter from a raid, though I always seem to kill the good ones and incapitate the bad ones

Ugh...forgot I had some frag grenades....I set up some sandbags and shot open the container...2 frag grenades incapacitated the centipede and scyther pretty quickly. Not even one injury sustained. I here I was freaking out that several of those things were hiding in there.

I know raids/ships increased in size as you went up in difficulty/length of game....but I didn't know colony population is also a factor. So I really thought 6 or more would pour out once it opened. Which was why I thought I was screwed.

Like the title says, the ship landed in shallow water right next to my base. Obviously I can't build a wall around it or place down some IED's (which I haven't researched yet anyways). My colonists don't have enough firepower or manpower to deal with this right now. Only have 4 people and best weapon is an assault rifle. Though only one of those. Rest are survival rifles or worse.

My only thought is waiting for a trader to swing by. They always seem to come down the coastline where the ship is. Go over and fire at the ship when they are close and hope they help out. I suppose I could load an earlier save but I'd hate to do that even if it means my colony is doomed.

Nothing else comes to mind right now, so I'm hoping you guys might have some ideas

Just a quick note on a typo...i believe you mean 'worth' not 'work' in 2nd paragraph, 1st sentence. other than that new player here and awesome game....Alpha 17 sounds great.

General Discussion / Re: Revealed Area question

I ended up walling it off and making a path to main area like suggested and so far only one visitor has come through new section. But he went right for the path I created. I tripled walled so I hope it doesn't look too inviting.

Guess the real test is when sappers start showing up. :)

Edit:  On a somewhat unrelated note: If I eventually build a wind farm in this area, I have a question on placement. For a wind turbine, do I have to worry about surrounding terrain? What I mean is if I put it right up against mountainous terrain, will I get a negative modifier on production even though I have enough space otherwise?  I don't know if the steep terrain would block the wind....seems the developer has given a lot of thought to everything and wonder if this is part of the equation.

Also on solar panels...do the shadows created by walls/terrain affect energy output? Sorry for all the rookie questions...I could probably find out on my own but my playing time is limited so I don't have much time to try 'trial and error'

Again thanks for all the replies...you all seem to be a nice group on the forums...nice change from several others I had the misfortune of asking rookie questions on :D

General Discussion / Revealed Area question
April 08, 2017, 02:07:19 PM
Tried searching for it but could find nothing relevant..

Just  a simple question. I'm playing in a mountainous map and my base is at the end of a long valley. I have only one opening in the terrain where anyone can attack from. While mining I exposed a large 'revealed area'. This area extends from my base all the way to the map edge. So my question is...can visitors/raids now come from that direction?

If I don't have to build defenses for that direction, I will be really happy, as my base setup will have to be completely changed up otherwise.

Thanks in advance for any responses

I have been finding a seed map I like and then ignoring character creation to see terrain. Still a bit of a pain as each try takes a few minutes. I can easily spend an hour+ looking for the right setup. Would be nice to be able to see one spot and if I didn't like it, simply click 'Back' to get back to World Map and choose another. Rinse/repeat til I found one I liked. If it's a limition of game/engine, then at the end of the day it's not a deal breaker for me. Just means it will take me longer to start game.

Wow. First off thank you for taking the time to reply with all the pics/descriptions. Looks I have a long way to go before I have anything comparable. Very nice setup. Will still complete one vanilla paythru but will definitely get rollers on my next base.

Hadn't though about caravans/base proximity, so my nearest friendly neighbor isn't even on the world map
if I'm on the closest zoom. Sounds like they would take weeks to do roundtrip.

Couple questions..

Is your freezer double walled? Is it for insulation or is it more for protection from raids? Are single walls really bad for freezers?

Looks like your conveyor belt goes around fthe freezer and through all fields. I assume anything grown/harvested has to be placed manually on belt. But the 'pushers' can be set to only push off certain items? Wouldn't they just fall on the first tile after pusher? Or does the mod somehow push all items down one tile to make room for next? Or do I need to manually place them in the freezer after they have been dumped off? Guess I could always get mod and find out for myself.

Thank you for the suggestions...

I didn't even think of selling them to a trader. I do have food enough for everyone. In fact I have way too much. I planted too many/too large so my freezer is overstocked and some of the crops just sit and deteriorate in the field. In a way I'm glad I did as have already had 1 Blight come through.

I will be adding mods at some point but since I'm a really new player I think I would like to complete at least one play-through before installing any. Would like to get a better handle on the game first. But I am interested in them (eventually) so i am taking notes on the one suggested.

@ RazorHed..is there any chance I could ask you for a pic of your freezer/barn setup? I'm really interested in what it looks like.

Again thanks for the help

New player here....

I started off with a warg and thought that was a pretty cool pet to start off with. But I'm not even through Fall in my first year and I've been inundated with self-tamed animals.

Have 1 buck and doe (both deer)
3 Alpacas
10 cats

They were eating everything until I finally figured out how to bar them from my freezer. But I don't what I should do with them all. I assume I can train the alpacas to be pack animals, but do the deer and cats have any useful purpose? Or can I slaughter them without any mood penalties? Pretty sure since they can't get into freezer they will start raiding my crops.

Is there a way to view the actual terrain when selecting a landing site, but before you select your starting colonists? I end up wasting a lot of time generating characters only to find out the terrain is not to my liking. I want to play in a mountainous setting with my base in a valley. So far I've spent a few hours trying to get that terrain. Not having to generate my colonists just to see it, would really speed up the process.

Thanks in advance for any replies and awesome game Ludeon. I have been looking for a good base building game for a few years since Sim City let me down and have no idea how I didn't find this before now.
