I agree to, I find it annoying when a colonist falls into a daze, collapse from exhastion from the daze (and is still in it), as soon as he snaps out of it, he is in a really poor mood due to lack of sleep and food.

Social- Prisioner's level up Social skill quite a bit.
Medicine- Not many ways to level it up, installing bionics, euthanizing wild animals.
Taming- Tame animals with low chance of them attacking, then sell them, or let them graze for their by-products.
All the other ones are pretty straight forward on how to level them up.

I recommend increasing the amount of wood you start with for ice sheets, if you don't want to be miserable.

It might be a mod i'm not sure... but in the misc tab there is an option to select where caravans stop on your map. so you could place them inside out of the way of your fields for example. similar to how you select where colonists gather for party's.

Mind posting a picture of a cave base you've built?
Generally keep things related close to each other, for example:
Freezer: Near entrance to cave base (for crops), Very close to dinning room and kitchen, somewhat close to prision.
Production Room: Near storage room, with room next to it containing Steel, Wood, Plasteel, and components.
Medical Room: center of colony with a storage room for medicine next to it.
Storage rooms are put in places that are convenent, and the bedroom are placed somewhere between production room, and freezer.
2 tile wide hallways connecting all these.
