Stories / Re: Evil Squirrels

That's your squirrel story?  Let me set the stage: Be 70 day old colony, rooms for all 8 of my colonists and even cooking up fine meals for all of them - about to set up a large room with hydroponics.  Randy Random had been good to me, only sending pirates and tribesmen barely able to walk and without very many friends... Little did I know, they were not my true enemy.

Should an attack on my fortress engraved in the mountain pass the outer line of defense, I have a Hall of Doom where my colonists and 4 improvised turrets can beat back almost any invasion - but turrets don't target squirrels.

First, a group of visitors from Tech's Head dropped by; poor souls.  Randy Random unleashed a wave of rodent psychosis the likes of which no one had e'er seen.  Foolishly, I disregarded the threat and did not bother to observe my impending doom.  Then, I see a message: "Visitors from Tech's Head are fleeing."  This perplexed me; I went to investigate.  All of them dead by a pack of psychotic squirrels maybe 6 in number.  OK, I thought, assemble the A-Team.  My colonists were recruited and took there positions and waited for what seemed like an easily won battle.  The squirrels began pounding on the powered door to get inside (note: I didn't have time to assemble the team at the outer defenses).  Breaking through, the squirrels charged my colonists... but there were not just six squirrels; THERE WERE 23.

My colonists joined me in the defecation of our pants.  The rabid rodents strong-armed all of my colonists and I ordered a tactical retreat into the mountain home.  Squirrels run faster than people, alas, the first to go down was Jono; then Minoca; then everyone else.  It was a game of rescuing a colonist, going out to fight, being knocked out, and then waiting for the person you rescued to rescue you without being melee'd to death.
Eventually, the squirrels were beaten by my melee champion but only with the neglect of our bodies.  "Colonist is starving" flashed about 4 times on my screen.  SAVE EVERYONE YOU CAN.  My cook was the only man up and so he received the arduous task of carrying his comrades to bed only to have them die in his arms.  He saved two of my colonists and for the next few days, they wallowed in pools of blood, eating the plentiful flesh of our enemy for sustenance.

Today I laughed when I read in the changelog that psychotic waves were broken.  Was I playing the same game?  Perhaps not; Phoebe Friendly does tend to break violent game mechanics.
