Manual burns are a pain, especially since the director seems to be coded to initiate rainfall any time a big, expanding, out-of-control outdoors fire gets going, to prevent it from choking the CPU.

I just stick dead critters in my deathroad graves. When they go off to evaporate a line of raiders faster than a medium-priced prostitute evaporates a line of cocaine off the breasts of another prostitute of similar price point, they detonate the contents of the graves, both critter and the previous run of raiders alike.

Aye, I've got tons of cash. I'd quite frankly rather pay danegeld than clean up the corpses and try to hock the guns. (Though admittedly, a lot of my money does come from my gunrunning, so I wouldn't pay them all off!)

Bugs / Re: Balance issues with trade ships

That's usually an artifact of having too many colonists.

I'm on 0.254b and I haven't seen a single mining ship, though. Do they still exist in this version of the game?

That'd be why. Check your emails again. You should have gotten a link to an upgraded version, .254b.

Quote from: lt_halle on November 10, 2013, 10:04:50 PMWelcome to Outpost Echo.

Aaaand now I'm thinking that that great honking bay in the middle of the mountain is a landing/launch bay, and airspeeders are going to tear out of there to zoom around on patrol. :)

Quote from: lt_halle on November 10, 2013, 07:12:58 PMIf you could defeat the event made to stop you from sitting in base and defending by sitting in base and defending, there's really no point to it at all, is there?

And now you're finally getting my point!

"Go out and kill the pirate leader" is one way to stop a pirate siege.

"Win at defending in sieges because you're that great a defender in that tight a defensible position" is another. And is my preferable choice. So smacking me down with rods from god before storming in with a ridiculous wave of bad guys is asinine, and it begs the question: why didn't he do that a week and a half ago when he first arrived? Why did he bother setting up a basecamp and showing up in person to be shot?

Yes, and if your walls were prone to exploding and bursting into flame every thirty days, you wouldn't bloody well surround yourself with them, would you?

precisely my point, building above ground as is forces you to constantly rebuild and redesign your base while tunneling gives no challenges whatsoever. Either walls should be made more reliable so you aren't forced to tunnel, or there should be something to force you out of the tunnels and into the light.

Force the player to do something stupid because the logical alternative has been nerfed to be really bloody stupid is not good game design.

Quote from: Galileus on November 10, 2013, 07:47:51 PMBest part in X-com Ironman? Having Veteran of the Month, Ferdinand (or was it Fritz?) The Shotgun Ninja run up to a Chryssalid in open terrain, and shock him with a stun gun. Darn, the tears of joy!

Aaaand you've just proven that you know not of whence you speak of.

Chryssalids can't be shocked! First time I tried to capture one, I was wondering why it wasn't letting me shock the damn thing, then I realized it must not have been a shockable enemy. And then I had my close quarters support ninja out in the open next to a melee terrorbeast and had a real "oh crap" moment.

Stormkiko: I love that "Use green carpet as astroturf" aesthetic. I hope you don't mind if I shamelessly steal it.

Altosk: I really hope some poor cat was standing next to the wall that blew. :)

Its actually pretty stupid. The far right Nutrition feeder had a random event and blew up. All my batteries emptied out in the process..... Lucky for me i keep the far right batteries disconnected from everything when they get full so when stuff like that happens i have power for 10 or 15 days. If youre referring to that wall of debris its there on purpose to slow down frag grenade rushers. Ive been getting between 60 and 70 raiders.

I was actually thinking of the kind of disastrous disaster that should have that stock Hollywood cat yowl happening in the background. You know...

"Ka-BOOM! Whamph! FWOOM! Reee-oooooooow!"

SourceVG: Wow. That's... Quite a bonehoard you've got going.

You should give five guys molotov cocktails and watch that mother burn!

Question: Did you rotate the turrets? If not, it looks like the side turrets in your pic should blow up the walls next to them.
#282
Tynan programmed the game to stop letting you recruit folks after you start to get above ten colonists. So no slavers.

To work around this, imprison like, five of your colonists or so. Make everybody else warden so they'll be constantly ready to rejoin if you should need them.

Quote from: lt_halle on November 10, 2013, 06:51:43 PMFine, ramp it up then. If you don't come out and stop them, instead of attacking you directly they bring in ordinance - perhaps some kind of orbital bombardment on your defense systems. The AI would find whichever areas have large concentrations of defensive entrapments - turrets, sandbags, etc - and the pirate ship would blow it up from space. To stop you from building dummy defenses saturated to make the ship blow it to hell, it would also check for areas where the waves mostly died previously. Or have pirates mine their way into your base through a random route. Or anything, really. There's endless ways a captain of a large raider fleet could break down the puny defenses of a colony if his initial raiders lack success.

So why would he pussyfoot around sending waves of half-a-dozen guys at a time? Why wouldn't he just start off with the orbital bombardment? And following that, drop his whole crew of 70+ straight on your settlement at once, curbstomping you with his superior firepower and numbers.

I think you can also try arresting your own colonists to bring your "colonist" population down low. Then of course, the problem is that (a) you're a jerk for arresting loyal people, and (b) you'll have to perpetually keep a working population of around 5 or so while you build up your prisoner population, but eventually you can have a huge population of happy, contented prisoners just waiting to be reintroduced to the colony.

Quote from: ShadowDragon8685 on November 10, 2013, 06:18:07 PMYou're also going to lose people more often

THAT'S THE POINT! YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO LOOSE PEOPLE!

No, that's the point of getting kicked in the crotch.

Every single dorf/colonist I lose is a kick in the crotch. It means I fucked up. I fucked up, and because of it, I have suffered an increased chance of fucking up in the future, and decreased ability to correct for future fuck-ups.

THAT IS NOT FUN!

Following up a fuck-up with increased chances of failure, even if they correct the problem that led to the fuck-up in the first place, is kicking the player when they're down.

You know what else feels like that? Going into depressed Detroit with a sign that reads "poor people are stupid and deserve their lot in life." (Replace with different places and different offensive slogans.) Watch how quickly you'll get "the point" of being knocked down and then kicked repeatedly when you're down.
