This is very much by design. Plants spread by shooting seeds around themselves, so if they can't "creep" to the empty area, they'll never grow there. Notice how in the last and second to last screenshot, the plantless area is seperated from the plants by a mountain or a wall.

Playing in arid shrublands is not helping either, the plants will take longer to recover there.

Well that is counterintuitive. After 5 years I would expect for at least some plants to appear in some places from seeds carried by the wind, animals and stuff like that.

No matter what my map should never look like "Martian surface". It is just wrong on so many levels. If such extinctions are normal for RimWorld, then why I am starting in green heaven?

Or can it sprout on soil out of nowhere after rain/time goes by?

Because if the answer to the title is yes then I'm beginning to wonder what the optimal geometry is for animal pastures, keeping strips of grass untouched so it can keep growing.

That would also be very silly looking if that's the best solution to keeping grass alive for large herds of animals.

I do not know how plants are spreading, but I know, that you can lost them all in large area. Just look at my bug repport:

Quote from: MultiDavid on August 30, 2015, 01:05:40 AMI had 2 chinchillas, and 4 muffalo, i had my chinchillas in an enclosed place with hay and they bred, my muffalos eating outside ? Haven't seen one of them pregnant yet, same for boomalopes.

It is good to rotate them from time to time. In small barn animals are closer to each other and have bigger chance to mate. But outside they are eating free food from pasture.

Ideas / Re: New Guns

Quote from: Askmyboar on August 29, 2015, 12:35:10 PMInstead of just "sniper" and "pistol" I think it'd be pretty cool if guns were specific.

Yeah, right, it was year 5500 and there still was names like Kalashnikov, Lee Enfield, Browning and others.

I am much more like current generic approach. Having 10 weapons with +/- few percents in stats will change nothing in gameplay (especially if items can have different quality) and will just complicate list of your stuff, so why even bother?

On the other hand all basic weapons could just have some graphic variations. For example "assault rifle" could look like M16, AK, FAMAS, G36... And no changes in stats pls.

And I am also not against some really new types of weapons like antimaterial sniper rifle, LAW, heavy MG and so on.

No comments on that ammo idea.

Not sure if this bug or not. This looks weird and gamebreaking, so I will report this anyway.

1. What the circumstances were.
I have played on large map in shrubland region. At year 3 I noticed that pretty large area on my map does not have any plants on it (no trees and no grass). It was not like this when I started playing. Not sure, what caused this, but possible it became like this after few poison ships (they was
lying there for a few months), toxic fallout event and volcanic winter. No animals was there to eat those plants. Right now it is year 6 and there are still no plants in that area.

2. What happened.
No native plants spawning on large area in the middle of the map.

3. What you expected to happen.
Native plants and trees spawning and growing all over the map.

4. How we can reproduce the bug.
Spawn a few toxic ships, add toxic fallout and volcanic winter, then wait. Killing all plants on map with debug menu gives almost the same result.

Quote from: Ithildae on August 29, 2015, 10:39:15 AMKill all other male chickens.

As I said: chickens are hard to manage. It is not so easy to find all roosters. And when I kill them I will have too many bodies to haul and butcher.

Also I am not sure about chicken's food consumption after I saw how ~100 of them exterminated hay, that could feed not less than ~20 muffalos.

But yeah: if you got large pasture and long summer, than you will have your meat.

Is there a reason we can't get hills (of any kind) on coastal maps? Would be cool to have a North Coast with abit of land in the middle and a mountain at the South.

You can get coastal mountainous regions sometime, but they are super rare. I like them very much and would like to see more of them.

So this does beg the question, what is the most efficient animal to breed for food purposes? I have never actually given my colonists anything other than simple meals because of the difficulty of getting meat, so I am interested in seeing how you guys handle this. Now that colonists are so cranky, better meals seem like they'd be very helpful.

I have tried muffalo, but they grow and reproduce not fast enough (but they give huge ammount of wool).

I have tried chicken. They breed with explosive rate and gain meat super fast. But they are just hard to manage because of enormous quantities ("crowded" debuff should be considered too) and butchering them takes too much time.

I am testing pigs right now. Still did not get good numbers of them to sustain my colony, but they look promising. They breed faster than muffalo at least.

I would think about it when RimWorld will be ready.

Ow, come on! Again? Really?!

So I loaded the game after some time and just forgot that I had pirates event when I saved it. And all my colonists was far away killing mechanoids. And my turrets was offline. Well... They came straight after my chinchillas.

And wow: they can defend themselves. They have killed 3 of those bandits before I came for help.

So.. playing away loving the new animal system, beating back wave after wave of enemies when i realise nothing is being hauled or worked on... i then see most of my growers, planting on what looks like gaps in the crop section... i fast forward the speed and notice that planted crops are just slowly disapearing .... the temperature is 22C so its not a weather issue.... Tynan, thoughts??

Do you have that green poison ship event?
Yes but i surrounded it in walls and its not affecting any flora around it

Try to destroy it and see what happens (you can do it with dev console just for checking). IMO this surrounding thing does not work at 100% or maybe it was fixed.

I had the same problem with poison ship. It was lying super long in my game and I saw too late that my colonists are constantly replanting my fields. It was killing plants, that was behind the wall from this ship part by the way.

On a slightly related note, anyone else annoyed how we start on priority 3 for everything? I don't get the use for that, as now it requires 4 clicks to get it to less priority.

Same with me. Those excessive clicks are very annoying. I would prefer for these numbers to be entered without clicking my mouse at all (target mouse and press number on keyboard).

Quote from: Ithildae on August 28, 2015, 09:30:43 AMas corn is more susceptible to fire, cold snap, growth period and blight

There is also storage time w/o refrigeration and corn beats all other plants in this. It is so high, that it is even possible to store most of corn not frozen.
