Stories / Re: Colony Log of the Everglades Settlement
October 27, 2020, 10:07:59 PM
A Conversation Years Later: (Outside Historical Record).

Jared, age 18 was sitting outside eating his lunch with Stephanie, age 17, Vectors daughter.

Stephanie: "It's too bad they don't teach us shooting at school."

Jared looked puzzled; "Why would you want to learn how to shoot?"

Stephanie shrgged: So I can help the sheriff kill pirates, or in case a war breaks out.

Jared looed up at the sky toward a barely visible moon: "I heard there are places out there where people don't have to worry about crime, or wars, or anything else for that matter."

Stephanie smirked: "Is that why you're leaving Triumph?"

Jared frowned: "I'm just going off to the nearby midworld university, it's not like it's any better than here. A lot colder from what I've heard. If I can find a job here after I graduate, I'll come back."

Stephanie shook her head: "I've never heard of someone that got off world come back."

Jared: "Isn't that what your Dad did?"

Stephanie: "He was a refugee from a failed colony on a bug planet. At least that's what he's always told me."

Jared grinned. "You don't sound too convinced."

Stephanie: To be honest I don't really want to know. He keeps a lot to himself, and he spends all of his money on alcohol. Hence, why you're going to university and I'm not.

Jared: I didn't think you wanted to go.

Stephanie: I don't. When I'm 18 I'm joining up with the militia. It's only a matter of time before the Supremacy or that stupid midworld invades, so I might as well be ready.

Jared: Well, I hope you don't die in a war or something unpleasant like that.

Stephanie: And I hope you don't end up crashlanded on some really silly planet.

Jared: Crashlanded? Why does everyone keep saying that?

Thanks man. This was probably one of the most memorable and tragic rimworld playthroughs I have had.

Regrowth Biomes of the Rim Wastelands is a serious challenge!

Ideas / Re: RE-thinking raids
October 21, 2020, 06:07:34 AM
I don't even think kill boxes are all that great of a defensive tactic. My best bases involve two layers of walls so that your pawns are completely blocked off from the raiders. This will cause the raiders to scatter far and wide, as they start chipping away at random bits of wall. This enables your pawns to step outside and swarm the raiders one by one. I think the raids are great. Kill boxes are just one of your options!

I loved this MOD. The Glitterworld Raiders seem like a fitting enemy for the Empire.

Very funny too: Orbital bombardment killed everyone, then the Man in Black showed up. Then the Man in Black gets instantly blasted. Brilliant.

Ideas / How to Make a Vehicle MOD

Just had a crazy idea for how to make a simple ground based vehicle mod.

Make the vehicle a type of armor.

Think about it...

Stories / The Stellarch's Masterplan

The Stellarch's Master Plan

Forward Operating Base Delta:

Duke Hamil of the Fallen Empire stood before a freshly dug grave to preside over the funeral of a fallen soldier. Behind him stood a tight formation of Imperial Troopers. Beyond the troopers was a massive fire pit where the bodies of a dozen or so pirates were being incinerated. The pirates had attacked the base the day before, using a combination of crude firearms and stolen Imperial energy rifles and AI persona melee weapons. Despite their armaments however, the rag tag group of brigands were no match for Imperial army discipline and were quickly put down. The unit had only lost one man in the attack on their base,  but it had been a popular man who was close to the rank and file so some pomp and circumstance was in order.

Once the body was laid into the ground, a chaplain sprinkled some incence and intoned the ancient prayers, pleading for the almighty to grant the fallen soldier eternal life and save him from the great void beyond. Once that was done, it was time for him to speak.

Hamil: Men of the 51st. Today was the last day for Corporal Edmer, a fine soldier we are laying to rest today. But it was also the last day for a hell of a lot of pirate scum that were foolish enough to attack our base.  You fought well, and if Corporal Edmer were here with us now, he would be proud. Let it be known his sacrifice was not in vain. We are building a new home for our people here. Once the rebel outlanders and pirates have been put down, we can rebuild our civilization. And then centuries from now, our descendants will be able to return to the home world and reclaim our glorious heritage from the wretched enemies that drove us away. Rest assured we are one step closer to that victory today.

The words may have sounded vigorous and convincing to the soldiers, but to Hamil, they rang hollow. Hamil had no memories of his people's former home world. He had been raised on one the ships that had fled from that world may years ago. But the narrative of exile and restoration were buried deep within the people of the Fallen Empire. Whether it was true or not, every sacrifice had to be made to look like it served that purpose.

Before Hamil could finish his speech the roar of a shuttle filled the air, and moments later, a shuttle landed at the nearby landing pad. The arrival was unscheduled. Hamil decided to cut his speech short.

Hamil shouted curtly: You are dismissed. Then he proceeded toward the shuttle.

When he reached the shuttle he saw the Bestower in her bright red robes accompanied by his honor guard filing out. However, he wasn't aware of a title ceremony today. Hamil approached the bestower and stood up straight.

Hamil addressed the bestower, sounding annoyed.

Hamil: Bestower, I am Duke Hamil, presiding over this base today. However, I wasn't aware of a title bestowing ceremony to be held on the premise today. Are you here by mistake?

The Bestower looked up at Hamil, and he could see past her hood that it was an old woman, an old crone, which was typical for that position.

Bestower: There is no mistake. I have come to facilitate your audience with the Stellarch. He will see you now.

Before Hamil could blink, the Bestower tapped his head with her psychic staff. Everything went dark for a moment, and when he blinked again he was standing in a blurry, shadowy version of the Stellarch's throne room which resided in the massive capital ship currently orbiting the rimworld. The Stellarch stood to the side of the throne, looking out of a window on the world below.

Hamil immediately dropped to a knee and bowed his head.

Hamil: My lord, forgive my lack of manners. This audience was unexpected.

The Stellarch turned around. He was a tall, older man, with a short grey beard, and draped in the high clothing of the nobility and adorned with the small psychic implants that all the nobility. But the purple robes didn't shine so brightly as everything about this place was clouded in shadow.

Stellarch: You have nothing to apologize for Duke Hamil. The improvidence is on my part. I would have sent a shuttle, but I could not risk a spy getting wind of it. But fear not, we can talk in confidence in this place.

Hamil looked up: Yes my lord.

Stellarch: Hamil, what progress have you made on the surface?

Hamil: My lord, progress has been slow and painful, only 25% of the surface has been pacified.

Stellarch: And have you found any willing subjects for me to rule over?

Hamil: A few locals have agreed to become yeomans and knights, but most of the native born are stubbornly persistent in rebelling against your rightful rule.

Stellarch: Rely on your puppets then. Conserve your remaining soldiers as much as possible. The real war may be returning to us soon.

Hamil: My lord, has the arch enemy found us?

Hamil, who had spent a lifetime in battle, shuddered at the thought.

Stellarch: The iron men have learned to make buildings now. Did you ever bother to wonder why that happened?

Before Hamil could stammer out an answer, the Stellarch answered it for him.

Stellarch: The software upgrade in the mechanoids originated from outside of this stellar system. It was transmitted to the local mechanoids soon after we arrived. That is all I know Hamil, but in the interest of preserving our proud race, we must prepare for the worst.

Hamil sounded dumbfounded:

Are we to run again my lord, after being in the void for so long?

Stellarch: I have found a potential new ally in the form of a nearby urbworld and its megacorporations. With their resources, we may have a chance to fight and win...if the arch enemy is even approaching us at all.

Hamil nodded: And what is my role in your grand plan my lord?

Stellarch: I assume now that the arch enemy has infiltrated spies throughout the fleet. So we will use that to our advantage.  Find me a capable puppet of local blood and help them ascend in the ranks of our nobility. The puppet will help convince the arch enemy that we plan to settle on this place. Then when the arch enemy shows himself, the puppet will be sacrified and my trap shall spring forth.

Hamil: got to his feet and bowed.

Hamil: It shall be done my lord.

Once he said this Hamil was pulled back into the real world and stood before the bestower once more. The old crone had a wicked smile on her face but said nothing. She then proceeded toward the kitchen hall where the troops were being served food.

One of his soldiers looked at Hamil.

Soldier: Are you alright sir? Did I hear something about the Stellarch coming here?

Hamil rubbed his eyes and shook his head.

Hamil: I'm fine. But no, the Stellarch isn't coming at all. The Bestower was just here for the funeral and got here late. Make sure she is treated well.

After a moment he added.

Hamil: And soldier, when you get back to your post, get me patched into Intel. I'll need a list of every unfortunate idiot that crashlanded here within the last quadrum...

Stories / Re: The Worlds of the Rim (Compendium)

Other Planets:

Ansali, Urbworld:

The innermost planet of the Ansali System, which also includes the slightly colder B18741 (Contested Rimworld) and the very cold PPV22: Tribal World, which is the outermost habitable world in this system.

Ansali is controlled by a group of Megacorporations which govern through a "Corporate Congress." Although considered a spacer tech civilization, Ansali culture and competitiveness have stagnanted due to the noncompetitive cartel style of governance and culture of corruption. As a result they have been unable to conquer either of their neighbors, though limited commercial ventures to both rimworld have proved viable.

Ideas / Railroad MOD
October 11, 2020, 08:22:03 PM
I don't think this would be a very hard MOD to implement but it would be really cool. It would fit right in for wild west games.

The modder could build off the code from the "teleport caravan" function. Whenever a caravan reaches a train station on the world map, they can pay silver to teleport the caravan to another train station on the world map. It would probably be easiest to just have a flat fee, that way the railroad becomes most economical to transport caravans for very long distances.

General Discussion / Most Insanely Cool Modded Threats
October 10, 2020, 10:28:58 PM
As a veteran player, I'm always looking for insanely cool and severe threats from the newest mods. Note: If something just insta kills all my people, it's not insanely cool. If it feels like it could wipe out my people, but somehow I manage to survive it or at least have a small chance of survivng, then yes, it passes muster.

If anyone else has anything they want to add, just reply to the thread.

Here's my two recommendations:

1. Vanilla Factions  Expanded: Insectoids. Some of the new raid types involved the bugs digging burrows and emerging endlessly until you destroy the tunnels. These raid types really put the pressure on my colony. The only let down was when I was powering up my space ship to leave. No tunnel raids then. Oh well, maybe the bugs were trying to sneak some larvae onto the ship!

2. Mechadroids: When the first mechadroid raid showed up, it felt like the terminator was coming to kill me. I had two of my colonists light it up with a hail of gunfire while another two assaulted it with melee. The bullets and melee barely did anything, while its return fire obliterated two of my colonists. It then decided to kidnap one of my people and leave. Nothing I could do to stop it at that point!

Stories / Re: Colony Log of the Everglades Settlement
October 03, 2020, 10:32:00 PM
A Conversation: (Outside the historical record).

Jared had grown up at the Everglades Settlements and lived a relatively peaceful life helping out at his father's

tailor shop. The village had seen a few disasters, the occasional earth quake, a forest fire, and a few severe flu and plague outbreaks, but there were no wars on Triumph, at least not in his lifetime. His parents had told him that things were different when they were growing up, back when people had to worry about pirate raids all the time, but things were a little better now.

Jared was happy on Triumph, but his parents didn't want him to stay. He was coming up on his 18th birthday, and that would mean it was time for him to make a choice. Either he could go to university on a nearby advanced midworld, or he could stay on Triumph and become a tailor or a farmer. His parents had worked hard and saved up a lot of money over the years, they really wanted him to go to university, but they said it was his choice.

But before he made his decision, Jared and his parents decided that he would talk to the one member of the community that had traveled to other worlds, an old man named Vector.

Jared met with Vector at the community rec room. The old man motioned for him to sit down at a nearby table and Jared obliged.

Vector: Mornin Jared, your parents told me  you wanted to talk to me about an off world university?

Jared nodded awkwardly: Yeah thanks. To be honest with you, I don't see what the point of off university is. I like it here on Triumph. I mean what's wrong with me staying here and being a tailor or a farmer?

Vector nodded: Nothing wrong with that at all, if that's what you want with your life. But your parents would see things differently. They know that life here is hard. When your sister was lost to the plague that really affected your parents. They want you to have a better life than they did. That's why they saved so much money over the years.

Jared sighed: Would it really be better though going off to that iceball midworld?

Vector nodded: You may not enjoy it, but if you worked hard yopu'd have opportunities. You could stay on the midworld, or come back to Triumph and get a good job with the government, or maybe even go interstellar, you can go a lot of placed with a good education.

Jared shakes his head: Now you're sounding like my parents.

Vector sighed: Ok Ok I'll level with you. I've never been to university, but I do know a little about being off world. I've lived on three planets in my life. My home planet was an urbworld. It was like, a giant city. You probably don't know what a real city is ... Ok, let me put it to you like this, the well off people lived really well there, everyone else had to struggle, but it was a different kind of struggle than this place. I had an alright life until I lose my job, that's why I had to leave. The second world was a bug planet. I still have nightmares about that place. It was no small miracle that I escaped from there. The third is this place. I was able to build a new life here, and I'm happy. But this place isn't all that great. It's kind of like the urbworld I lived, corrupt government and all that. You can do better man.

Jared pursed his lips: Alright, I'm going then. Thanks Vector.

Vector: Umm Jared, before you go, just a word of warning. Sometimes, weird things happen in space. So if you end up crash landed on some weird place, don't blame me alright?

Jared laughed, assuming that Vector was joking: Fair enough. Thanks again Vector.

Stories / The Worlds of the Rim (Compendium)
September 29, 2020, 05:42:42 PM
This is a compendium of a few of the worlds that I have done play throughs with. If you have anything interesting you'd like to write about your own rimworlds, feel free to add them to this thread. Just make sure you explain how other people can generate your world to play their own games in that setting.

M1847: Toxic World

Settings: Minimum temperature, precipitation and population.
Scenario Settings: Permanent Nightfall (Sunblocked), Permanent Toxic Fallout
Disable Incident: Solar Flare
MODS: Anything with mechanoids, or mechadroids, or androids Faction control (No tribals).

Description: A tidally locked world orbiting an M class star. Only the night side of the planet is inhabitable. The failure of terraforming projects resulted in extreme temperatures and a poisonous atmosphere. Home to a few small colonies. A failed attempt by Terracorp employees to take control of a mechanoid army resulted in increased interest in advanced robotics among the colonists.

PPV22: Tribal World

Settings: Slide temperature two times toward cold. Other settings at default.
MODS: Faction Control: Hostile Tribal Only

Description: One of two inhabitable worlds in a G class star system, the other being an urb world controlled by a few Megacorporations.

While terraforming succeeded on PPV22, all efforts at colonization failed because the planet was too cold for natural farming. As a result, only nomadic tribes permanently inhabit these lands. The mega corps however regularly hire independent contractors and mercenaries to establish temporary bases, mining camps, logging camps, and other expeditions, in search of wealth to exploit.

Historical Footnote (Result of Rimwar Campaign): In the year 5545, MineCorp, based in the Ansari Repiublic hired a division of elite mercenaries to subjugate the tribes to clear way for a massive deforestation and strip mining operation.

The invasion failed, with the mercenaries sustaining heavy casualties before they were evacuated off world. As a result, PPV22 remains solidly under control of its fierce tribes.

Bernham: Post Apoc Tribal World
Settings: Slide temperature one toward cold, increase precipitation. Slide population one to the left.
MODS: Faction Control (Hostile Tribe only, though you could add other factions if you want. Probably the closer you are timeline wise to the cataclysm, the more advanced factions you'd see), Regrowth, Biomes of the Rim, Wasteland.
Scenario Settings: Disable Event: Orbital trade ship arrives

Description: An ancient glitterworld civilization once resided here before it was destroyed by an unknown cataclysm hundreds of years ago. Now, this world is dominated by savage tribes. It is rumored however, that a few survivors managed to escape into crytosleep vaults, only to awaken many years later to find their former homeworld in ruins.

Royalty Version: Add MOD Simple Industrial Factions:

-Eventually, the remnants of the old civilization emerged from massive underground vaults and began to vie for dominance with the savage tribes. Around that same time, a splinter fleet of the Fallen Empire arrived on the planet, and now also seek dominance.

Triumph (Somewhat Peaceful Rimworld): For Full Information, See Post: Colony Log of the Everglades Settlement

B18741 (Contested Rimworld)
Settings: Default
MODS: Faction Control: No tribal factions, Royalty.
Scenario ideas: Brigands, Insurgents,

Description:

The recently arrived Empire appears to be in the early stages of colonizing this rimworld.
The Imperial army decimated the tribal factions, enslaved the survivors, and established small bases and settlements throughout the planet.

However, the Empire has met stiff resistance from violent outlander and pirate factions. It is unknown if their resistance will force the Empire to abandon their plans for full scale colonization or not.

Vanilla Weapons Expanded: So you can start with muskets.
Hospitality
Boats Wish their was a 1.2 for this one :(
