I'll post this on the wiki next chance I get.
Here's an initial draft.

A closed door set to hold open will open as usual when a colonist passes through it, but once open it will stay open. To do this on demand, set the button, draft a colonist, and have the colonist walk through the door (the door will now stay open).

An open door that is no longer set to hold open (its default setting) will remain open until a colonist passes through it, then closes as usual. To do this on demand, set the button, draft a colonist, and have the colonist walk through the door (the door will now close).

What about other pawns, like animals, mechs, raiders, and visitors?

Jimyoda

An open door with Hold Open disabled will close back up whenever a colonist or friendly human passes through it. If an animal or enemy unit (i.e raider or mechanoid) passes through the door, it will not close.
