Is there a storyteller / difficulty setting or mod to generate smaller raids much more frequently?

I find myself constantly forced into static defenses - and eventually, killboxes - after a certain level of growth. That's fine and all, but I'd like to build an open colony without spamming turrets and IED's all over the place, instead relying on my colonists to train and fight. When I get raids of 50+, and I only have five colonists, it's kind of like: ok, fine, here are your turrets. Here are your killboxes.

I don't want fewer baddies overall, I'd just like them in smaller groups.

It might not quite be what you want, but I really recommend trying Rough difficulty if you want to play without killboxes etc. With the rest of the settings the same as Challenge, and only fewer enemies in each attack, it's pretty close to how RimWorld is "meant to be played" (as the Challenge description says), but I don't find myself needing to build a killbox or even any turrets (except around crashed ship parts).

Colonists do sometimes die, though. Realize that might happen. Or just reload from the latest save when they do.
Some sort of psychic wave has swept over the landscape. Your colonists are okay, but...
It seems many of the scythers in the area have been driven insane.

Hmm. Not sure what numbers I'm supposed to see, but I'm at 50 raiders for my five colonists on Rough. It drops to 30 on Basebuilder (I just checked). Still quite a lot for five colonists without static defenses.

Then you have way too much wealth. Size of raid is based upon colony wealth.

Cimanyd

Yeah, did your colony get more wealth than a normal 5-person colony usually would? (I don't know exactly how it would, but maybe an established colony with half the people then dying and leaving you with 5? Mining a bunch of plasteel? Finding treasure in an ancient underground building?)

Or are you playing with mods that would somehow affect how big your attacks are or how rich your colony is?

Gotcha. Yeah, I'm playing with a bunch of mods, but the salient one is probably Crash Landing. All the crash landers died, but the resource modules dropped a ton of stuff on me.

So I should set my stuff on fire to bring the raider count down, huh? I can do that.

Not perfect, though. Is it possible to make a mod that will send raiders in waves? I want those fifty raiders, I want to fight them. Just not all at once.

IIRC if you put the valuable items outside either/both your stockpiles and your home zone (and then forbid them so they don't get carried back), it won't count toward your wealth. You should be able to look at the graph in overview>statistics after a little while and see if it drops.

Mods can increase the wealth of a colony by a massive amount, some of those items in Superior crafting or Glitter Tech are worth tens of thousands of silver alone.
I know this very well.

12 living Colonists vs over 1200 pissed off Vikings.

Cassandra (Basebuilder) does give a much lower raid size with the same frequency as compared to normal. Usually from what I'd see, it cuts the raid sizes down by half at least. So its an option if you wish to take. I often use that setting because I find the Cassandra (Rough) setting to give pretty ridiculous raid sizes after awhile.

Smaller, more frequent raids and less reliance on turrets is what I'm looking for as well. Free play is too small but Basebuilder scales up too fast. I started experimenting with modding over the weekend, tweaking the threatScale in Difficulties.xml to see if I can find a sweet spot in between. Still not sure how wealth is factored in though and whether that's easily moddable.

I'd like to see:

  • Smaller raids over time - rather than hundreds, the number of participants in raids should max out at between 1.5-2x my colony population.
  • Raids have better load out - raid equipment scales with wealth, so chances of getting tribals later on is very low. This probably requires adding either more intermediate weaponary or apex weaponary to the chain, in order to lengthen the progression until you reach that peak.
  • Raid type increases - e.g. the addition of sappers recently.

Basically, I want raids to always be challenging but not silly (or CPU crashing). Lower raid size but increasing their lethality and variety helps, I think.

I believe the following will work:

Build a loot hut, set up a stockpile, and move tons of valuables there. Forbid everything, delete the stockpile, and remove the home region from around the building. You shouldn't own any of that stuff anymore, but you can still go get it if you need it.
