Random warg packs?

Is this a new unannounced event or something else?  A half dozen wargs just went after my colonists -- and not all at once in a manhunter pack, but rather, one by one sneaking up to my base with no warning.  Fortunately they stand out nicely against the nice snowy background or I never would have noticed until they started chomping.

Most annoying, they walked right by my turrets without them making a peep.  Why isn't there some setting to shoot large predatory animals on sight, whatever they're hunting?
If you give an annoying colonist a parka before banishing him to the ice sheet you'll only get a -3 penalty instead of -5.

And don't forget that the pirates chasing a refugee are often better recruits than the refugee is.

maybe they were starving?

You would imagine that the turrets have some sort of chips implemented (rasberry pi ? :) ) to discriminate large predators. But thinking about it, they DO spot the animal flagged for hunting or hostile factions, so why not, indeed....

Snownova

Animals can always randomly wander into the map, including predators. If there is nothing on the map or even just nearby for them to eat, predators can become aggressive towards your colonists.

I live in tundra, so yes, any predators that show up will find my colonists as their nearest meal.

Maybe that's it.  A pack of wargs showed up, and one by one they got hungry?

Most likely. If there was no announcement of any kind, it's just the AI doing its thing. Some of them probably managed to munch a couple of hares or squirrels so their hunger hit the critical point at a different time than the other wargs.

Not too many of those around.  Every time one shows up the game says "Yay, finally someone to declare Manhunter!" and it charges my turrets and dies.
