Limited resources

How do you cope with limited resources? In Dwarf Fortress, you can trade with regular caravans, who bring a LOT of stuff or mine 100+ z-levels of rock for materials.
But in RimWorld I found that I usually stuck with pisspoor caravans or trading tons of food for a heap of steel. And long-term colony survival is limited by the map, as you can't venture beyond it to get some more resources when you depleted all you had.
And with recent cutting down in trade ship arrivals(is it not, like, 4 times less to occur?) it's a waiting game with farming and gathering enough to trade every scrap from that rare trade ships.

That's pretty much it. In the end it boils down to trade ships.
Consider yourself lucky if you have lots of farmable soil, you have infinite stuff to trade (plants, food, animals, beer, parkas...).

Don't forget you can go into devmode and force an orbital trader to show up when you're sick of your freezer filling up with corn.
If you give an annoying colonist a parka before banishing him to the ice sheet you'll only get a -3 penalty instead of -5.

And don't forget that the pirates chasing a refugee are often better recruits than the refugee is.
