Removing a roof

If I use the remove roof zone tool, will they do that automatically?  I built a solar generator and they roofed the room over (you can't seem to use the tool BEFORE the borders of the room are complete and this is (of course) the one time they decide to roof the room immediately upon completion so my attention was elsewhere.  Now, of course, the generator won't work as it can't access the sun.  I don't see a way to prioritize the roof removal and it seems that removal is way down the job priority list for them.

Yes it is low priority construction job. So, simple solution is to cancel other construction jobs untill they remove roof

You can designate a no-roof area before beginning any construction, to prevent them from installing a roof. But if you wait until they've built a roof then you'll have wait for them to tear it back down.

Note that this is different from the build-roof area, which is created automatically when a wall perimeter is completed if you haven't previously established a no-roof area.
If you give an annoying colonist a parka before banishing him to the ice sheet you'll only get a -3 penalty instead of -5.

And don't forget that the pirates chasing a refugee are often better recruits than the refugee is.

I've had the exact same problem, but I have three idle Construction pawns. I've undesignated the roof area around my geothermal generator and solar panel, but nobody is removing it. This has happened to me in previous games before. Is this a bug?

If so, is there a way to fix it with DevMode? I'd love to be able to turn off the auto-designating roof build areas too...

They need to be in extremely close range to remove roofs. That might be your problem.

You might be able to do the same as with constructing roofs or cleaning:

1.) If it's in a room lock them in it (forbid the door)
2.) If not restrict the to a zone that only includes the construction area

In the other hand, if they're idle it suggests that it's not a just another job taking priority.

They're idle, they can just walk over there...

I think I found my problem though. I was Un-designating the roof build area, and apparently I need to Designate a No-Roof area. I was reading the wiki and apparently I've never seen the No-roof options in my game, I was just looking at the roof build options...

What I mean is, if the roof is unreachable they won't go to it in the first-place.

when i use the roof remove area they usually dont care. I have to force it with the no roof area, then they will get rid of the roofs.

You can force roof removal the same you can can force any work. It is just hard to do because you can't actually see the roof you want them to remove, and they will only remove only remove one small section at a time (A room large enough for a solar will likely take 5-6 right clicks to full remove the roof if forcing).

That's correct. If "no roof area" meant "actively remove roofs" then you'd have constructors running off to remove thin rock roofs whenever they are exposed exposed by miners.
