So, if you aren't following Tynan's twitter, he recently sent out a screenshot of what looked to be a map, with other settlements, trading and expeditions. Building on this idea, I have some suggestions. Enjoy!

Map:
A buildable item, like the comms console. It allows you to plan expeditions. To travel, you select the destination, your expedition party and the resources you are taking. Depending on how far away it is, you will be away from the colony for a certain period of time. To add challenge, there would be a chance of a raid or another event happening while you are out, which you cannot control. You cannot control the colony while the party has gone. Once you return, you will be notified of anything that has happened and how long you were away.

Destination: Rivers' Tree, +22 Relations. Neutral.
Type: Raid
Party: Cormack, Fiona, Javier and Hayhouse
Animals: 3x Muffalo, 1x Warg
Other: Capacity: 540 Units. Taking: 300 Silver, 240 units empty

Estimates:
Opposition: Good
Opposition Defences: Shoddy
Opposition Worth: 13504 Silver (Total)
Time: 4 Days, 6 hours away

/\/\/\/\ This is a vague idea of what the expeditions screen would look like

Expedition Types:[/b]

Visits:
A party of colonists can be sent out on a journey to another encampment. If they are friendly or neutral, they will send a representative to speak with your party's leader. From here, you can trade, give gifts such as Silver or Gold, or just simply explore.

Raids:
You can raid any faction, but those who are hostile will have defences up. You can control the battle like any other, but this time you are the attacker. Once the enemies are defeated, you can take whatever resources you can carry and capture any enemies. You can deconstruct the colony and take the resources, or simply leave it be and pillage the stockpiles.

Trade Caravan:
You travel to a destination, and you are able to trade along the way. Once you reach your destination, you can trade with the occupants.

To give a more immersive feel:

You control the journey. You can click on a map tile to move your group, and it is possible that each tile may be:

A trade caravan (You can trade off some goods)
A tribal encampment (Either they approach you for trade or attack)
A group of explorers (Possible trade, might fight)
A herd of 'X' animals (Will attack)
Nothing (Just an empty tile :P)

What do you think?
Only in RimWorld is the phrase "31 Heavily-Armed Siegers are currently bombing your base" preferable to "50 manhunting squirrels are attacking your colony"

If this is true, I am pumped for the next update.

Yes, daduhweewah, it is! Go onto either Tynan's twitter or the Steam hub and you will see a fairly unpolished looking map with what looks to be travel opportunities!

Lightzy

That is a godawful suggestion.

Not being able to control the colony if you send out a raiding party of a few skilled fighters? WTF why

please sir

TBH, it could be like, you send them out, play the colony, and time "freezes" for the colony when you control the raid, and vice versa, and then when both timelines colide when they come back, do that....plus, I think colony automation could be somewhat predictable. But I sense these are late game tasks, which will pad out the game a LOT.
Why to people worry about following their heart? Its lodged in your chest, you won't accidentally leave it behind.

-----

Its bad because reasons, and if you don't know the reasons, you are horrible. You cannot ask what the reasons are or else you doubt it. But the reasons are irrefutable. Logic.

LouisTBR

Why? To add some challenge, you ignorant prat. If you could control the colony as normal, you would've taken all the other states with about 0 challenge. Travelling across the map is a big thing, which should require you to control it directly.

If you don't agree with something, make a positive comment with helpful criticism. 'Godawful' helps nothing...
