I propose to add this type of map event :

We have a heavy lack of .... (this resource). Could you bring us as much of it as you can until ... (datum)
We will pay you ... (price) for each of them.

I propose a price three times bigger than the usual sell price to make the event interesting.

It will be still difficult to do, still force the player to send caravans but will make the mission realisable.

In the actual game, if you haven't managed to collect all the items required, the actual need resource event doesn't interest you and doesn't change your game. With this one, you will always be capable to collect at least some of the required resource so you will still have the idea to create a caravan.
I will never do worse than what I do now.

I like it!

It needs to be capped at a certain amount, I think though. Otherwise, people are going to get rich FAST, and the whole RimWorld economy is going to go to shambles again :P Maybe that goes without saying ;)

You are right, so including the modification, we have this sentence :

We have a heavy lack of .... (this resource). Could you bring us as much of it as you can until ... (datum)
We will pay you ... (price) for each unit of...(the first thousand for example)  and the common price for any you can bring more.

or just :

We have a heavy lack of .... (this resource). We need ... (amount) of it before ... (datum)
We will pay you ... (price) for each of it, even if you don't manage to bring us the complete request.
I will never do worse than what I do now.

Yeah, i once had a request for 42 tuques....i immediately set up a second tailor bench in my 7 man colony, queued up a "make until 42" bill for tuques on each, set tailoring to highest priority on my 3 semi competent crafters, and had the other 4 hunting and gardening for materials.

My colony got filthy, food went unhauled, no building progress was made...and i got 26 of the tuques made before the request expired....

I get that it makes sense for the game to ask for what the (simulated) neighbors need, rather than what you have, but when the VAST majority of the caravan requests are for "1500 berries in 14 days" or "2400 agave fruit," then they stop being relevant to the player that knows that he can't fill almost ANY caravan request.

This.  Early on, these requests are completely ridiculous.  My colony doesn't have 2400 food of any sort in storage, let alone 2400 *extra* of the specific type that's being requested.

How about a caravan request for any or all of the following:  3 tuques, 2 dusters (normal or greater quality), 200 rice, 35 herbal medicine, 4 steel clubs, with the amount to be paid listed  after each item.  Make the individual requests much smaller and give me a variety of things I might be able to make, grow or gather up in the time allotted, with payment for whatever I do manage to bring.  If the request is for 200 rice and my colonists end up eating 10 of them along the way, pay me 19/20ths of the listed price or even 19/20ths minus 5% as a penalty for not bringing the whole amount.

I'd also like the ability to "ask" for items as well...

Comms console interaction:  request caravan with X item in it.

In the next 10 days, a caravan with that item (multiples, or thousands, depending on the item) MIGHT show up (just like the player doesn't always send out the caravan) - but the item is marked up to double (red cost)

get that last 200 uranium you needed in a flat map for the spaceship...save that luciferium addicted super-crafter in your colony...stock up on food for the winter after an untimely blight.
