I had my entire colony take penoxycyline and within a day 5 of them had contracted malaria. Do I not understand how penoxycyline works? or is this a bug?

From the save game the colonists will develop malaria within about 1 day, despite having already taken penoxycyline. If anything else is required let me know.

First of all malaria as other diseases has hidden stage. When your colonists are sick but you don't see the symptomps yet.

Also: "In Alpha 17 its cost is further reduced from 3 to 2 neutroamine. It also received an overhaul, such that instead of instantly boosting disease immunity to 61%, it now provides true immunity and cannot reactively increase immunity against a disease that is already in progress."

So if your colonists took it after they become sick(which is probably the case) it doesn't work. So it's not a bug, it's intended.

Which is somewhat askew of the purpose of preventative medicine.

Instead what we have is something that resembles some sort of preventative measure that fails to actually prevent. It looks like "fails" is the operative word on exhibit with that particular scenario generator, and thus a good reason to avoid it.

There are several medical mods on offer, although I don't know if any of them directly address healing and/or prevention of malaria.
