There should be a variety of ship debris.

The wide majority of the time, it seems that the ships flying in our neck of space are 90% hull (the other ten percent have mechanoids or really crappy escape pods). While it's understandable that they would compose most of the ship, it'd be neat to have some uncommon variations. Similiar to regular debris, they look like a chunk until deconstructed, spawning their contents instead of components, with some steel and metal slag.

Kitchen/Cafeteria piece: Has a white color instead of the usual green. Kitchen sections spawn with fine/lavish meals, and some cooking ingredients (vegetables, meat, animal products). Cafeteria sections would also spawn with meals, in addition to chocolate and beer, along with some uninstalled tables and dining chairs.

Medbay: A grey paint with a blue cross. Drops Glimmerworld/base medicine, hospital beds, vital monitors, and perhaps even some bionics, if you're lucky. In case of emergency, Penoxycyline and Luciferium.

Armory: Dark coloring. Contains slightly damaged modern-to-spacer weapons, quality never lower than normal.

Engine: Ships have to get around somehow, don't they? Cheaper than our somehow-antimatter propelled engines, these simply break-down into uranium and steel.

While not necessary, and probably unlikely, it might be neat to see some pawns in these parts too. Hurt badly, like escape pod survivors, with backstories to match the ship chunk they were in, like "Space marine" or "Starship Cook."

Resource and escape pods then?

I'm just wondering who's sending metal boxes with cargo pods full of piles of elephant meat around the universe.

Now that is a wicked idea. With Pod launchers you can load them up with whatever you want and have the option in the select landing site to launch it into space. You can only load Vanilla items into the pods when doing this and then the pods go into a queue on the server. Whenever the story teller decides that you have a drop pod event it is the next drop pod in the queue that gets dropped. No pod in queue then a random one drops.

We could send up pods with cool stuff like a male and female fully trained huskies, Uranium, Packaged Survival meals, High quality clothes etc. Then you could always just fill a pod with chunks or a pawn with luciferium addiction with full bionics and a plasteel longsword.
Mods I would recommend:
Mending, Fertile Fields, Smokeleaf Industries and the Giddy Up series.

The Mod you must have:

The event queue sounds awesome. I would buy that.

Depending the crash varietes : Have you guys looked into the crashlanding mod ?

You got crash features from Weapons Decks over leaky Reactors to whole ships raining down on you.
Maxim 1   : Pillage, then burn
Maxim 37 : There is no overkill. There is only open fire and reload.
Rule 34 of Rimworld :There is a mod for that.

I feel as though raw ship chunks heat up quite a bit on re-entry, burning any organic compounds on the way in- unlike pods they are most likely not sealed up. But, getting the occasional plasteel or uranium from a chunk could be fun.
