What does having to pick 3 of 8 do?

I mean, I would get it if you had to re-roll all 8 at once or something.

Is there a mechanic behind it, or is it just story telling fluff?

From what I can tell, it's an opportunity to help you roll characters.  If you have three you like but you want to try to roll the dice and get someone better, you can save them and try for more.
If you give an annoying colonist a parka before banishing him to the ice sheet you'll only get a -3 penalty instead of -5.

And don't forget that the pirates chasing a refugee are often better recruits than the refugee is.

I'm somewhat surprised Tynan didn't mention this in his youtube video.

I actually thought those extra people were from your ship and would come and find your colony later on.

Well also, it's been mentioned elsewhere that if rerolling seems too much like cheating to you, you now have an option to get rid of obviously useless characters and replace them with useable ones without having to roll the dice again.

I would rather the character creation system didn't constantly spit out useless pawns.  Why is anybody forbidden from doing anything at all?  The "Brawler" mechanic could be used instead -- let everyone do anything, but just give a mood penalty for doing it.  So the artist who refuses to haul stuff will be ok hauling as long as you make sure not to make him do it for more than an hour or so before the -20 mood penalty has a chance to really bite.

To avoid insane micromanagement we could create subdivide the work category into "work lite" and "work hard" -- pawns set to the first will avoid activities they don't like, pawns set to the second will drive themselves mad doing whatever needs to be done.
