UI disappears, game won't autosave, and then error loading map

I've loaded two saves so far and had this issue, where i'll just be playing the game, and then suddenly the user interface disappears, and the game seems to try and save by the grey box appearing in the middle, but doesn't go away. So then I alt tab and close the game, then load the save, and it says an error occurred and I can't load it. I have minimal amount of mods, so what should I do? Reinstall?
