This game would be next level if it was an MMO sandbox style game where multiple players connected to a world.

Each player would be responsible for controlling their one character.

Players could go about and play the game how they see fit, using the existing mechanics of RimWorld.

Multiplayer specifically, has been brought up many times. Incidentally, it's also basically never going to happen, at least not until a sequel, or if a modder put it in; It's simply much larger than the current scope of the game, even if the lead dev weren't moving on from the game after 5 years. :)
