I remember it was said somewhere that there are 3 vents on every map, although they might be buried.  Also, in combat you can draft everyone and park the limp, lame & lazy out of the way.

What I need is a button that my people stay out off combat. Also I need kevlar vests

If you have colonists you don't want to enter combat because of injuries or they are just that vital to your colony, enlist them (R) and send them somewhere safe. Just remember to un-enlist them after the battle.
