Kinda basic but make sure the stove has a bill active for simple meals and that it is set to make them forever.  I've run into issues where i neglect to set the proper meal type to the intended cook's level of skill and the ingredients available.  I usually figure out I screwed up when people start eating raw food and I have to scramble to catch up.  When my population starts to get big I make an extra stove and set it to simple meals for a fixed number of meals as a buffer and reset it once that bill is complete.

Without seeing a screenshot, it's hard to say, but maybe your farms are too big and therefore need an excessive amount of work to plant?

You can get away with a pretty darn small farm to start with.

I build my farms in 5x5 units. Strawberries are good when first starting because they can be eaten raw. My sure you have one person set to cook and a bill to cook them. I also design my growing zone next to my storage to reduce haul time and my kitchen next to that. if you have everything far apart the haul time will kill you.

I thought indoor soil farming is much too productive.
Just build a small (10x5) farm build a sun-lamp and a heated building around it. Then you have enough food for a small colony.
It actually seems to be more productive than hydroponics because you don't need power or walking spaces.

Feels so much like an exploit that I probably won't do this on my next game.
