Have a way to incapacitate a hostile without actually killing them.

Tasers, shoulder-pocks, something to disable without killing.

Whenever I get a raider who is a family member of one of my colonists I tend to want to take them captive and recruit them.

The larger your colony is, the more likely it is the story teller will auto-kill a downed pawn to prevent your colony from getting too big. Which means any incap weapon can be fatal even if it's not actually fatal. (Kind of gamey, IMO.)

Psychic Shock Lance is a less than lethal way to incapacitate a pawn. It has dangerous side effects, just like real tasers.
