Turrets, scythers, and save scumming

So I thought I would try playing a colony without turrets but on an easier difficulty level and see how it goes.  Well... not too well is the answer at the moment.  Two scythers showed up to attack me.  My guys are parked behind cover plinking at them.  Most of their shots miss.  But when they hit I lose hands left and right.  Well that's not acceptable.  So what do I do about this?  There are no armored gloves in the game, if I build any fixed cover (sandbags) they'll just shoot at me from out of range, and I can't see any other way to protect my colonists... other than turrets :(

I think Rimworld needs more defensive technologies or something.
If you give an annoying colonist a parka before banishing him to the ice sheet you'll only get a -3 penalty instead of -5.

And don't forget that the pirates chasing a refugee are often better recruits than the refugee is.

Addendum: on my third savescum try I managed to not lose any hands or other vital organs.  So it's not impossible... just annoyingly difficult.

As for bears... they're going to get shot up in larger raids, die, and cause my handlers to have temper tantrums.  Until the bonding mechanic gets fixed, no :(

It's actually pretty difficult to murder a bear =) .

Yep, gotta go with bears here.

All of my new colonies are extreme difficulty, permadeath & no turrets. Animals are absolutely essential for playthroughs like these. Prevent animal bonding by not training your animals, just assign them to a zone and hide behind them like the meat shields they are. Or you can have packaged survival meals, fine/lavish meals, insect jelly or chocolate waiting in storage in the event of bonded animal death for the mood boost.

Why not both?  Train one cadre for haulage/etc. and leave the rest to defined zones, as you suggest.  Assuming you have the food resources to do so, that is.

"Have fun crossin' that bear zone, friend, but I'll pass." xD

Do you have DARK areas on the cover, with a roof? (assuming this is on the town edge)

Dark provides a big extra cover amount.

If not, troll them with quick fire guns like shotguns or pistols. The charge rifle does huge damage, but the wind up is huge too.
Why to people worry about following their heart? Its lodged in your chest, you won't accidentally leave it behind.

Its bad because reasons, and if you don't know the reasons, you are horrible. You cannot ask what the reasons are or else you doubt it. But the reasons are irrefutable. Logic.

Minigun* or charge lance*

And it's definitely possible to stop them without too many serious injuries.

It is possible to build anti-mech bunkers, but it really depends on terrain. If there is a place where mechs have to pass closely to get at your main entrance you can dig a small hole into a mountain and put some stone columns at the front as cover. Preferably granite and later plasteel. You basically have to line yourself up perpendicular to their path.

Works really well with charge rifles. Less so with low power weapons though.

I can't remember the last time I used turrets. I normally play Randy Random on the hardest difficulty with Iron man turned on. I really enjoy the tribal scenario too. I had one game where a ship part fell before I could get my hands on any guns. That was an epic battle between 5 tribals, 6 Alpacas, 2 Labrador vs 2 scythes and 1 centipede. I won and didn't lose a colonist. RIP the brave alpacas.

easy peasy, guys in personal shields (or ugly pawns..ha!) draw fire while others plink away.
Skullywag modded to death.
I'd never met an iterator I liked....until Zhentar saved me.
Why Unity5, WHY do you forsake me?

One reason why I don't think animals need a buff as they currently are. If anything a nerf since they are too good at drawing enemy fire and forcing melee attacks.

So if you park untrained bears in the line of fire, which side should they be on?  I imagine in front of my colonists so they catch stray enemy fire and then charge?  Because if I plop them next to mechs they'll be catching plenty of friendly fire.

This, very much. They recharge relatively quickly too.
