Colony Specilization?

Would it be interesting if players were encouraged to specialize their colonies to some degree based on the local conditions? Such that ultra-arid colony positions would have a hard time every being viable agricultural producers (or maybe only being to grow very specific crops), while mineral or energy availability defines whether or not you can create a viable manufacturing economy?

Or it could be a thing where in addition to having a 'research' skill, some colonists have particular specialty that really increases their research in a given field - meaning that if you start with and/or capture someone with a given specialty, you're incentivized to expand your colony into that field to take full advantage of the bonus.

Otherwise the trade ships will tend to be of little value after a while. If every colony can easily build out into a jack-of-all-trades, then you don't really need to trade, and it becomes easy to construct a stable, steady-state economy that runs too smoothly.
