Meandering animals

I don't know if this is true, I haven't been playing long enough, but I read on reddit about how the current game mechanic counts just total animal number on map, maybe also how much food in meat is on the map, with a cap to how much is on there.  Now apparently what this means is that if you zoom out and only pick off what you can see then your map gets filled with small game and once the cap is hit you don't get any more large animals until you thin the numbers.  Are we OK with this or should the animal behavior be altered to better reflect what happens in nature?  Some animals that set up home base and others that wander around?

Also, I'm just going to take this moment to express just how much I want to see Meerkats in here, with their burrows.
