I don't think any kind of subspace transmission you get should really be news oriented, maybe just little easter eggs that come across the Comm Console once in a while. Something like

A small probe has been detected flying past our colony. It loops the message, "This is a present from a small, distant world, a token of our sounds, our science, our images, our music, our thoughts and our feelings. We are attempting to survive our time so we may live into yours".

Or maybe something else like

An older model sleeper ship has been detected passing by. It goes by the name of Botany Bay, and an automated message reply indicates the entire crew is still in cryostasis.

Nothing that really tells you anything, but fun little pop culture references.
