RimWorld is fun on your own but I would love to be able to play with other people!

It's one of those things that sounds good on paper, but would never work out in reality.  If you really think about how the game works, all anyone would ever have to do to get around your defenses is blow your walls up or mine through the mountains.  That, and the code to this game is simply nowhere near ready for it.

When dealing with a game like this, 2/3 of the work goes to creating a game, and 1/3 of the work to multi-player functionality alone.  He could always half ass it and shit something out like Kalypso did I suppose, where there were no checks or verifications at all.  Mods worked with that game on multi-player lol.  You could literally just change the value of anything for you without even using cheats because they put 0 work into the  multi-player, and even with that level of simplification in security, the multi-player crashed constantly.  It was so simple you could change the values for yourself and add buildings your opposing players didn't have, and they still couldn't get it to work with that level of simplicity.

As absolutely amazing as it sounds, Tynan is working on a small starter company budget.  He might be coming out with one of the best games of all time here, but if he chooses to remain focused on developing the game single player as opposed to putting months and months of time into making it multiplayer, lets encourage it to stay that way :)

Multiplayer in this type of game seems really out-of-place.  You got to worry about pausing and unpausing for setting up and micromanaging.  Waiting for other people to unpause is a bad concept.  Take that out a you have yourself a real-time strategy game.  But there's also the issue with time and how the game is played.  It takes hours to build up a base, but what if someone has to go?  Their colony become free game for anyone?  You're playing inconstantly and waiting constantly for other's.  It's a great single player game, but not a game built to support multiplayer in a reasonable way where it is.

Hello Martion, welcome to the forum.

Multiplayer is one of those hot topics that pops up here every third week or so, with varying results. While i'd certainly love multiplayer implemented, i think its far in Tynan's (the developer) list. Which is not necessarily bad because: Tynan has not said he won't do it, just that it's too much work now; It IS better to work on multiplayer after everything else is finished, because you can have an entirely different game for multiplayer (and that's fine).

As per the thread, I disagree with antibodee or keychan on MP not working in reality or being out of place. It's tricky of course, it can be done bad alright, but there's nothing in the concept of multiplayer that automatically banishes a title to single-player-land,  or turn rimworld into a bland rts-starcraft clone for that matter.

If there's a whole set of ways that multiplayer can screw the game up, there's at least that many more that will make it stand out and make it really cool.  As long as you have a solid SP experience i don't think people who dislike MP should worry about it. (don't worry, Tynan will focus on SP).
