Right now my usual routine with a new game is to start farming, build a cooler, and cook food.

Could we add another option for food that doesn't need a cooler? Somewhat like how the packaged survival meals function.

What about a meat smoker that uses meat and wood to make jerky styled food that doesn't need to be kept cool as a food source? That way I could have a reserve of smoked/dried meat as a small snack or small meal.

I liked how dessicated meat could be used as an ingredient in the past to somewhat simulate it. Since it's been removed now why not add an intentional method of drying meat for a food source.

I mean, who doesn't like jerky right?

Completely needed.  Tribals could carry the jerky as well.

StorymasterQ

Yeah, who doesn't like to jerk their meat?
I like how this game can result in quotes that would be quite unnerving when said in public, out of context. - Myself

The dubious quotes list is now public. See it here

Makes good sense, especially for the frontier theme. How about salt barrels too - you stick several stacks in it, and after a long time, it kicks out salted 'X'.

Covered in Weasels

I would love a meat smoker, salt barrel, or some kind of cooking method that doesn't require electrical power.

Don't Starve taught me that Jerky was life.

A way I imagine would be to make it as a bill for the kitchen or butcher table and to have the kitchen use the result as an ingredient.
> Meat -> Meal
> Meat -> Jerky (rot slowly) -> Meal

Once we get some sort of real "Tech level" the Jerky would make a good low-tech way of story food.

If we give it no thought bonus (like simple meals and survival meals), make it cost all meat (duh!), and remove the "ate off ground" negative, I'd really, really like this. If pawns ever get one or more inventory slot(s), you could use jerky to give them something to eat while away from the base without getting mad about eating it off the ground. (I mean... who would lay jerky on the ground to eat it? >.>)

That it would cost meat (meaning you have to hunt and it lowers how many fine/lavish meals you can have) and a longer cooking time (to smoke) would keep it mostly balanced, I think, so long as it doesn't give colonists the mood boost (so fine/lavish meals and therefore, freezers, would still be a long-term necessity).

The "ate of ground" Negative come from not eating on a table, I see no reason to take it off since it's coherent. We just need to hope the 'Joy' feature allow as I think to "store" joy to overcome temporary debuff like that.

Early game a "Low Expectation" buff compensate for that.
