Do colonists not clean carpets?

Perhaps vacuum research has not been added to the game yet?  I have a base with dirty carpets within the home zone, and my colonists are wandering around idle not cleaning it up.

my people clean everything as long as its in your home zone and nothing else has a higher priority

Home zone is the only place that gets cleaned.

I just checked and they seemed to clean everything even the carpets.

Home zone is a designation you give to areas you want clean and to indicate where you want your goons to fight fire.
They wont do either of the 2 outside of that zone

I do think he means the "greater than 1 block" smudges you get on carpets sometimes (they do look like the kind of damage water or other liquids would do to a carpet). They do not count as "dirt", and therefore do not get cleaned up.

Sometimes it gets cleared by loading, which points me into the direction of "not implemented/partially implemented floor damage". Or a feature to not let bases look squeky clean. Or maybe its the floor shining through the carpet (if you lay carpet over a sand/rock border?). idk.

I've noticed the same thing. I think Merry may have hit the nail on the head- although the graphic is the same as for dirt (specifically, sand in my case), it can't be prioritised with a right-click and doesn't seem to make colonists unhappy. I get it on metal tile as well as carpet. It seems to happen most in high-traffic areas and around plants and lamps in rooms that are on the edge of the base, so maybe it's the ghost of dirt previously cleaned. Reloading a save doesn't always remove it, though I seem to have slightly more luck when loading an Autosave rather than a custom save (perhaps it's just about waiting for the periodic memory cleanups).

If you're seeing genuine dirt, it could be a task assignment problem. When your populations starts getting large, you sometimes have an idle colonist wandering around town ignoring a task right next to them, because it's been assigned to another person who has just finished mining 200 tiles over on the other side of the map.

I've never seen this "ghost stain" phenomenon, or at least never noticed it. What does it look like? Can anyone post a screenshot?

Uh...aren't you describing the mud/dirt colonists bring in from the outside on their feet? It'll be the thickest at entrances to dirt/sand floor.

I notice this too, I'll have to try to pay attention to whether saving and loading ever removes it. But I definitely occasionally get dirty spots on carpets that never seem to get cleaned, even when I have 20 idle colonists with cleaning enabled. I've only ever noticed it on carpet, though, maybe it's just more visible there?

Here's a screenshot of what this mess looks like in my base.  Note the bedroom on the lower left, and the area around the lamp at the top right:

And here's another showing that this room is clearly within the Home Zone, and note at the top right that ALL 10 of my colonists are idle.

Interesting.

So that graphic there isn't actually filth; it's one of the "scatterers" that some terrain types get laid randomly over them to break up their repetitive base graphic. That one goes over sand and dirt, I think. You can see it if you look carefully. It doesn't represent filth in the gameplay sense.

What I'm not sure of is how it's displaying in there, over the carpet. Perhaps it's actually outside and is sticking through the wall. Or maybe it's inside and there was a bug that caused it to not be erased when you created the carpet.

In any case, this is a bug.

For dirty carpets section you must add carpet cleaning section also.
