Quotea colonist will join reasonably early (on Cassandra or Phoebe).

After playing 1c a bit, I have mixed feelings about automatically getting colonists. On one hand, it's a random thing that can change the player's plans and force more dynamic decisions. On the other hand, getting dead weight (especially right around the time survival meals run low) is kind of meh. I guess it could have been worse if the new colonist had dementia? My first impulse was honestly to strip clothing and have the colonist hang out in -50F weather.

Sidenote: old people are pretty gimped. I've yet to meet a healthy colonist over the age of 51. Especially in the far future I'd be surprised if the effects of aging weren't at least slightly slowed by superior diet, medicine, etc.

I haven't had that event so far but can't you simply not accept a new colonist?
Also even if it's tge future you shouldn't forget it's a rimworld, there isn't that advanced medicine.

I'm pretty sure you can't refuse, unless I missed an option several times. The only option is really to kill the new colonist off if you don't want them in your colony.

As for age, the people that end up on the Rimworld haven't necessarily been there long. Many have backstories that indicate they crashed on the Rimworld after living, for example, on glitterworlds. Plus glitterworld medicine can still be bought from merchants.

Well an old person is still better than nobody. If you don't like him you can still send him to Belize.

Silvador

Sounds like you just had a spot of bad luck. Still not as bad as the instant failure I had.

I always turn that old person into the cleaner, kitchen helper. and give them a bedroom right beside the kitchen. They can butcher, while the cook does the cooking.

Honestly, I think choice needs to be implemented - on whether or not the colony will allow a new recruit.

For a game that allows a lot of freedom, it seems odd that this one aspect - one that colonists would actually have control over - is forced.

Hoping to see this put into the game, eventually!

Yeah, All of my auto join colonists have been 55-80 years old. The last one I had, I arrested and sold into slavery.

To be clear, spontaneous joiners have always been in the game - the only diff now is that cassie/phoebe will always send you one some time in the early game.

Getting the 85 year old nudist/volatile/psychopath should be like an automatic win condition, you should make that guy king  ;D

I honestly feel that instead of getting one sent early game, you should get an escape pod like you used to early on in alpha 5 and 6. I feel that way if we don't like the colonist we can just rescue them and let them go instead of being stuck with a shitty colonist auto joining.

But shitty colonists are part of the fun/challenge/FUN!

You could just get them killed off...? I mean, having the old bastards run off naked into the middle of a battle would be an easy way to get them killed off/ taken away
