The ability to select someone as a diplomat. The job would kick in any time someone visits. If they are neutral they will try to increase your reputation with there faction. If they are friendly they will attempt to recruit some visitors to the colony, as well as increase your reputation. This would not happen very often. But you could add in some research options to build things that would increase there chance to raise rep and recruit. Things that you normally build to make your colony run functionally, morale and joy wise, would increase your chance as well. Basicly adding in another way to gain colony members.

Let me make this clear though. I don't think it should be easy. I think if you focused on it completely the whole game it would be a viable alternative to buying slaves but it would not be as reliable. They basically have to already be unhappy at there current colony before they would even think about joining you, and you would have to seem like a better option then there current situation. So in no way would it just be a passive increase to recruitment other then, slave buying, and capturing people who were trying to kill you.

Just a thought.

I'm a huge fan of this idea. Currently, if any visitors arrive at my colony, and I'm desperate to recruit them. I beat their comrades senseless and capture the guy(s) that I want on my side. I'm told this is not how you make friends :/

On top of being able to assign a diplomat, you could open up some of your resources (consumables, for example) to be accessible for visitors. That way, they all visit, have a bite to eat from your own stores. Perhaps the quality of the meal/consumable they use can increase the reputation bonus you receive from it. Similarly, if they're able to eat at your tables and use your colony's entertainment (billiards table/chess/etc), they gain a further rep bonus.

As you say, it should be hard... like... really hard, to gain enough rep to then recruit someone. However, that, combined with buying slaves and capturing attackers, you can end up expanding your colony relatively quickly. I never buy slaves, so I rely on randomers joining (which is happening more often since the latest update) and capturing people. This would just add another element, which would tie in well with calling a certain colony for aid.

This may be for a new thread, but you could also include that gaining rep with one faction would reduce the rep with another. I'll admit, I haven't looked into whether this is already in the game, but if so, it would work well with this :)

Great idea wakko! Would love to see this in the game!

++1   That's a double plus one. I'd love to have an alternative to altering a faction's disposition without resorting to bribery.

I think this would be a great idea. I'd be content with "Warden"-assigned pawns friendly-chatting with any visitors (as opposed to passers-by) and getting a chance to recruit them then and there (with modifiers for social skill, beauty, and perhaps colony wealth per colonist).

if you can imagine it I can build it with pixels.
if I cant well then imagine something else.

+1. Not being able to interact with visitors in any way is very upsetting.
