Hi everybody, i'm a french gamer, and i would like to share my vision on this sci-fi game.
I apologize if my english is not good, i try to do my best for explain my ideas.

I call colonists "Rimco", for RimColonist, because they are crashed on the Rimworld.

What gave me this idea, this situation in game : some raiders are attacking our colony, and after the raid, an assassin is in incapacity, but he is still alive. You put him to the prison, and after a few days, he join your colony. But he don't know do anything except kill.

I think, the fundamental thing in a situation like a spaceship crash on a desert planet is the knowledge.
At the beging of the game, each person has different knowledge who giving different skills.
If a Rimco don't know one knowledge, he can learn it with a library (furniture).
Change certain disabilities in ignorance, so to learn knowledge and to have the skills that are related.

Each library could be allow to learn 1 distincts knowledge between [Combat training], [Architecture], [Agriculture], [Work hands], and [Science].

A library who's just be built is empty. You must write some books of knowledge with a Rimco who's got a skill at level 1 minimum.

The level of skill of the Rimco who write the book define how much experience need another Rimco who want to learn the skill.

A library could be rewritten by a Rimco who has an higher level in this skill.

Learn knowledge would be a long time, but would venture to go from level 0 to level 1 in a skill.

You need chairs alongside the libraries to enable Rimco learn.

Each technology should be hooked to a skill. A scientist must have a minimum level of 1 in a skill to search technology associated with this skill.

When a scientist found a new technologie, every Rimco who had the level required on this skill can use it. For exemple, after "Advanced architecture" research, all Rimco who's level 6 in construction can build small pre made house.

Each skill level will accelerate research, in addition to the level of scientific research.

Technology should be a tree, which evolves according to the knowledge of Rimco, and content of libraries.
Thus, if the only Rimco with "Science" skill dies, and you have not created a library containing this capacity, you must redo all the research about Science.

Here is the list of technologies allow to obtain the skills :
Caption : [Technologie] (Give) {Allow to reserch}

[Combat training]
    (Call to arms) => Like said in precedent post
        {Shooting} => Like already
        {Wardening} => Like already

[Architecture]
    (Construction) => Allows the construction of wall and doors
        {Habitation} => Allows the construction of furniture like bed, equipement rack, flower pot, chairs and tables
        {Energie} => Allows the construction of power lines, generators and lamp
        {Defenses} => Allows the construction of sandbagwall and turret
        {Basic machines} => Allows the construction of research table, comms console and nutrient paste dispenser
            // With [Habitation][Energie][Defenses][Basic machines] => {Advanced architecture} => Allows the construction of predetermined building
            // With [Basic machines][Technical Working] => allows the construction machine manufacture, to create objects such as weapons or kits

[Agriculture]
    (Growing) => Like already
        {Hydroponic} => Like already
        {Fertilizers} => Improve 15% the growing of plants
        // With [Sikness] => {Medicinal plants} => Allows the construction of medicinal plants growing area
    (plant cutting) => Like already

[Work hands]
    (Mining) => Like already
    (hauling) => Like already
    (cleaning) => Like already
    (plant cutting) => Like already
        {Technical Working} => Improve 15% of work hands and allows a Rimco to create a manufactured item if [Manufacture] is known

[Science]
    (research) => Like already
        {learning} => Allows Rimco to learn skill to other Rimco
        {Rules of social life} => Allows Rimco to be social
    (Medecine) => Allows rescue other Rimco, heal a Rimco at bed
        {First aid} => Allows heal a Rimco
        {Sickness} => Allows care for a Rimco who has a disease

Related Concepts :

Sickness => Rimco can catch a disease, which will weaken. If the disease is contagious, the patient should be quarantined.
A sick patient will go alone in quarantine, if his mental state is stable. Otherwise, it will get out and the others Rimco will have to put it in quarantine and lock. A mentally stable patient sees his mind destabilize faster. Illness destabilizes the mental of Rimco.

-Fever : slowly reduces the life of the patient, we can't work and move. not contagious
-Flu : the sick person can't work but can move very slowly. contagious
-Plague : the sick person can't work but can move very slowly, is life slowly reduces, very contagious.

Advanced architecture => The advanced architecture allows to build some pre made buildings, like houses, laboratories, or social spaces. Rather than having walls, bed and door, you have the 4x4 surfaces, 6x6 or 8x8 already designed, and requiring only 25% of the resources used for construction in hand.

And now, I finished explaining this concept. I thank all those who read to the end, and I invite you to share your comments, to know what you think.

Edit : I was wrong in my explanation, your comment Galileus made me react, and I corrected after replay.
The principle is not to learn every skill related to a domain (such as First aid in medicine side) but to learn the domain (Science, Construction...).

Galileus

Learning different skills for building different kinds of buildings and such would lead to a lot of micro-management. As for the idea of being able to re-enable some skills... I'm mostly neutral, with slight negative bias. Eh, the times when people would roll a class and roll with it... and pray to RNG gods. Good times.
