So only having had the game for about a week, I am having some trouble understanding how weapons compare. Obviously sniper rifles have longer range than everything, but take longer to fire, and assault rifles fire faster than pistols, but what about similar weapons. What is the comparison for assault rifles vs charge rifles vs the uzi thing (cant remember what its called)? What about molotovs vs frag grenades? How does the incendiary launcher work (I dont really want to waste it)? Further, what is the difference between any of the melee weapons? Does the material make a big difference? And the armor, which helmets are better? Is a colored shield somehow better than a regular one? These are things I need to know.

Check out the wiki as it will answer most if not all your questions.

With regards to melee, material used makes a big difference.  Good question about the shields, as I've never thought about it.

At any point in game, you can access an item's stats by clicking on it, then the "i" icon.

Wow, that basically settled everything except for the question about shields. Thanks.

Shield colour makes no difference.

You can look at the stats of any weapon (or apparel) by selecting them and clicking the little " I " button in the bottom left, or by right clicking on equipped weapons/apparel.

Also if you turn on Dev Mode ( Options -> Development mode ) and press the Debug Logging Menu button ( 4th from the right ) and then click on "Tables: Ranged weapons" ( Last in the list ) it'll bring up a table with all weapon statistics.

Keep in mind that table only lists the stats of weapons at Normal quality and 100% durability.

Regarding melee weapons - the old agility information on the wiki is out of date but fortunately the weapon information pages now actually show the calculation when you select the melee cooldown, so you really don't need to know it anymore.
A prison yard is certainly a slightly more elegant solution to Cabin Fever than mine...

I just chop their legs off... legless prisoners don't suffer cabin fever

You know you can also just tinker around in dev mode and create firing tests, spawn the weapons and targets under controlled circumstances.

Just to note, the actual weapon table is slightly outdated. More up-to-date stats are on the individual pages for weapons, and you can see some helpful stats and the explanation for some of the more cryptic ones if you hover your mouse over there.
