At least the storyteller has a sense of humor... or a sadistic streak.

One of my 3 starter colonists is a poorly sighted, cataract ridden, 78 year old woman with dementia and a bum leg. I never know if she's actually going to come back after some of those "fun" walks she takes.

I had one of those.  Even better, the only job she would do is hunt.  After a while I was able to replace her eyes and legs and she is now a pro hunter/defender.  Can't do much about the back though.

mine is a artist. she is slow as **** but she makes such great artwork i even gave her a personal sheild.

I generated what I though to be an awesome doctor/crafter/artist.
He probably was. When he was young.

Dementia, frail back, poor sight and low consciousness make his lvl 13 doctor less good than a lvl 6 and he sculpt at 60% speed, which make him take forever to sculpt anything (he is now lvl 20 because it is the only thing he do all day since a year).

I also had a colonist with an (old) self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head with an assault rifle. How the hell does one take something the size of an AK-47, aim it at their own head, pull the trigger... and live?

He was actually an optimistic scientist. Go figure.

Currently... You can. There are some parts of the brain that we don't really need/other parts can take it functions. And for example there is/was a girl that had removed one hemisphere of the brain, the second side of the brain has adopted its functions. After this she had only some problems with left parts of body - that's all.
