I'm not sure if this counts as a story or a bug . . ..

On day 37/38 of Chill Callie Classic I got hit with this raid.  I counted fourteen of them to my nine colonists.  My three best weapons were an Uzi (depicted), a Pump Shotgun (with Corbune) and a Lee Enfield (held by Rambler)--everyone else had pistols.  Bates, Dickson, and Kemp (on the Raider's side) had Frag Grenades.

On hour 1 of day 38 . . . there was a solar flare, so my defense guns shut down.

By hour 4, all of my colonists were dead, to two raiders.

Our "special" weapons had been taken, at high cost, from previous raids.  A single Combat Supplier had passed by on day ten or so (right after I got my radio built) and I managed to buy a pair of pistols from them (they had an R4 Charge Rifle, but I didn't have the money to get it).  I'd seen a couple of Industrial Traders, a pair of Slave Traders and an slew of Farming Traders (yeah--doin' fine with food, thanks--that's how I afforded the slaves).

In cases like this, you should have had defenses inside the walls, so that you can take advantage of all your colonists. Turrets don't have unlimited range, so Lee's and M-24's can take them out unchallenged.

The most important thing in this game is choosing a defensible position for a base. Generally the best place to look for is a natural inset in the mountainside. Then dig inward and establish your most important assets inside. Another important thing to note is that you can defend a lot better if enemies do not have a direct line of sight with your base until they are in range.

(note: This is the absolutly ideal spot, even better if you find thermal vents there)

Raiders tend to hug the walls as they assault you, so mines are your best friend.
I don't use waffling or "kill rooms" and this has been a standard set up for me.

If you can't find any kind of natural inset, start digging one out, the first 3 raids should be pretty easy to defend.
I have about 12 colonists on Kassandra (evil bitch) and i regularly take out raiding parties of over 30 raiders without breaking a sweat. hope this helps...

Another way is to have a setup with walls just like you do but place all of your defenses inside your wall. The raiders will try to break down your (single) door, the weak spot. If you place 2 explosives close to the door you can take out 50-90% of the raiders. Place the explosive charges far enough from your wall so it doesn't get blown up. Sometimes you even kill enough raiders with the explosion to have the rest flee.

What's funny is I had forgotten about the blasting charges. Awesome illustration too!

Really exciting in the end

That sir was your exciting end.

Not a bug.

Chill callie usually ramps up the difficulty by about day 40  (almost instantly, if you had killed them, she would have sent 14 more)
So dwarf fortress in space eh?
I love it.
I love it so much.
Please keep it that way.

I've had once I place always a lot of blasting charges near eachother so when 1 blows up everything blows up. So raiders can only go 1 way to enter my base placed it full of blasting charges and I only need 2 guys to fight the rest 1 shooting and 1 for taking the guy away when he gets incapacatated or dies. So my quickest battle is like 20-30 second when they attacked
