The Ice Shelf Challenge

Has anyone managed to make a successful ice shelf colony in sub-freezing temperatures? I've come so very close a few times. The last colony I made had four people. I managed to successfully research hydroponics, build a hydroponics room in a highly defended fortress with heaters in every room. My power systems were outputting plenty of power to last through the winter, as I had decided that winter would best be reserved for only the collection of food and textiles and no new construction. It was early in the fall when temperatures began dropping to -30 F and below, but all was well in my mighty little fortress until, BOOM. Fire in the battery room. Yes, THE battery room. I'm still laughing about my foolish decision to put all of my batteries in one room. My colonists valiantly tried to fight the blaze, but with temperatures in the room exceeding 1500 F, they only succeeded in nearly killing themselves with horrible burns. So it was left to one noble soul to save the fort. He could not cook, he couldn't cut plants, he couldn't perform any kind of medical assistance, but he could mine, and he could build. We had managed to keep the battery room itself intact, albeit without batteries. I knew I had only the daylight hours to work before we all died. He left the base in a hurry to mine compacted steel, it was always in short supply being the only viable construction resource in the vicinity. Suffering frostbite in his hands and feet, he carried on, but it was all in vain. I hadn't the time to rewire the base, and hadn't the foresight to use switches on my systems which consumed the greatest amounts of power. In the end, he managed to mine enough steel to layout and build three batteries before going to bed and sleeping for the last time. It was a sad and tragic bit of fun for me. How have your experiences panned out?

I wouldn't call my colony a success at this point, as I've only fought off 2 small raids and still only have my starting 3 colonists, but might I suggest that, instead of doing hydroponics, you wall off & heat a section of growable land (Its rare on Ice Sheet biomes, but its there!). This saves you on power (Sure its minimal) because you don't have to worry about actually powering hydroponics trays, steel because you don't have to build the hydroponics trays, and finally time, because you don't have to actually research hydroponics and can free that colonist up for other research or other work!

Just this little bit of saved resources & time can go a long way on a 'barren' map such as an ice sheet!

After hearing the stories about it, I'm really looking forward to trying my hand at the ice sheet biome.

To be clear, do any animals whatsoever spawn in ice sheets, even on rare occasions? A Muffalo is the only animal I can think of that might be able to whether the weather, but there probably isn't any food around for them to eat, so I'm guessing there aren't any at all?

Do Wargs attack in the ice sheets?

Hehe. An inhospitable wilderness sounds like a worthy challenge.

I play exclusively on ice sheet biome. Its really not that hard. you just have to set up quickly and make sure your colonists don't go outside in the winter... they can't make it far from my colony without falling to the ground with severe hypothermia. Oh and you have to farm trees. Just look for a good area with some dirt or gravel.

There are no natural animals that spawn on any ice sheet that i've played on.

But warg attacks seem to be common, and they provide extra food for the harsh winters when it's hard to keep the lights on in my colony so do all the visitors and raiders who die of hypothermia.

I need a more extreme biome. game is just too easy at this point.

Have fun landing in an ocean. Or Volcano...

I like games, but unfortunately they don't help me get a degree.. so I'm going to be inactive for awhile.

ProTip: start off in a ruined building that you can patch up. Heat and food are top priorities. Lock your outside doors all winter.

We all know some players won't be satisfied unless they play in a volcano with constant fallout and surrounded by infinite raid of raider&mechanoid sapper. And even then they'll be asking Tynan to spice up the game.
"Sam Starfall joined your colony"
"Sam Starfall left your colony with all your valuable"

People always talk about their succesfull/unsuccesfull colony on a biome, but then always forget to mention which storyteller and difficulty they were playing it. That makes an imense difference.

There's ice sheet, and then there's -80C OH GOD SO COLD ice sheet.  You're robbing yourself of the full experience if you don't try the coldest map possible at least a couple of times.

Over in Stories BlizzCounty is running an a11 Let's Play on the -80 ice sheet. It's good watchin'.

I really think more essentials need to be added into the game, like a need for water.

Or we need more extreme biomes or planets. Maybe we crash on a planet with extreme temperature swings night and day, or a planet with no breathable atmosphere so that we have to set up an artificial atmosphere and pawns can only survive outside in spacesuits and did kid they are shot outside.

Hello I am doing very well, with Ice sheets biome, with Randy Random, set to Extreme Difficulty my newest ( Let's play RimWorld Alpha 11 Modified. Better AI? )

I used crash mod + zombie mod + 99% hard snow/air borne/volcanic/toxic and cold snap playing on randy, extreme starting on October(-30~ -40 C) (I could not play and survive on Nov - Jan since it was too cold)
Cold snap/toxic/volcanic last for 1500 days with 1 re-fire day.
1. Find Steam geyser near steel source.
2. Use 1 colonist mine steel while others keep hauling resource such as food or materials.

3. wall up and make a room with steam geyser inside.

4. build beds and heal up

5. fight the infection until everyone is fine (immunity state)

6. Build research table, get more steel. If you have more than 2 colonists, you can use 1+ research table to get hydroponic faster.

7. Build nutrient dispenser, get more steel, get more power.
8. Build up the defensive system of your colony.
Steel is food. Steel is defense. Steel is weapon.
Steel is RimWorld.

I've found if you just want to do an Ice sheet for fun. There are a few mods that can make it much easier, and don't forget the Socks!

Edb Prepare Carefully
Temperature Control
Apparello
Norbals

These mods will give you mainly what you need, and well this is optional... but become a Cannibal. Because you know... when you are a cannibal, every raid except mechanoid is a food delivery.
