Whats in the Packaged Survival Meal that makes the pawns go long distances just to eat it instead of the simple meal.

Likely some sort of protein pack like military rations. likely very bland tasting but filling.

Don't forget, if it's a MRE, it might have chocolate or some candy, which could provide reason.
