Workbenches requiring power?

So, some (not all, which is nice) of the "production workbenches" in the game require constant power.

Specifically, the "tailor" bench and the "smithing" bench. Both require power, which makes it exceptionally difficult to play under the "tribal/primitive" challenge rules.

You are telling me a warp-weighted loom and a smelter+anvil are preposterous ideas?

Plus, the smelter would give an alternate source of metal: bog iron. I usually play on the Boreal Forest Biome, with tons of marshes and bogs about. Rather than mining for metal (which I find both  1) cheapens the "tribal challenge" and 2) is historically inaccurate (shaft mining was historically very dangerous, and not common without either 1) a bunch of slaves that no-one cares about or 2) a steam engine).

Most iron was sourced from bog iron up until the invention of the steam engine (which made shaft mining practical)

Mod it.
Doesn't make any sense to change the base game to accomodate some arbitrary rules made up by a random person.

If the mod is good quality, cohesive, and adds to the game, Tynan may add it to vanilla too. If you can't mod and don't have time to learn, consider submitting a mod request.

The tailoring and smithing recipes don't have to be tied to just one table. I think ItchyFlea pointed out to me that the game's auto-generated recipes for these can be referenced by other benches. So it would be Make_ItemDefnamegoeshere, and you can add those to the list of recipes in the def for a modded bench.

And if you want some more help doing it yourself, can always try joining the rimworldmid slack. As it's live chat it's easier and more convenient if you want to ask questions about modding or need help. https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=14501.0 And it can host files n images.

I find it extremely odd that they both use power while idle. You'd think your colonists would remember to hit the power switch when they start or stop using the sewing machine...

They probably don't even have power switches, they're just attached and powered on constantly.
