Has anyone else found convenient ways to train nit-picky skills like shooting, melee, construction and so on?

I myself, like to use granite walls as target practice and they also suit for a small construction buff as well with the repairs that need to be had.

Im just looking for tips for ease of training

Rahjital

Hunting trains shooting faster with less micromanagement, so I tend to train shooting that way. Just make sure you train with a pistol, the skill gain is the fastest that way.

Construction can be trained by building lots of wooden dining chairs or chess tables. Chess tables are better for training but aren't as useful as dining chairs are, so that's a bit of a tradeoff.

Futrettamer

I do the same as you for those two Rahjital, but do you, or anyone else, have suggestions for training melee skills without getting killed?

If playing without mods that add shooting ranges, build your own. Have pawns target a segment of wall and remove it from the home zone. If you want to clear a tunnel, have colonists mine it with shooting. For melee,  find a tortoise who has no legs and nurse it to health, then you beat the crap out of it for a while and nurse it back to health.

Panzer

I train shooting with incapacitated mechs, they can still take some beating. First I get a poor or awful pistol, set it on fire or remove hp somehow til it got less than 5% left, after that I build a sandbag in front of the mech and then fire away at max range. I managed to raise colonists with no passion to lvl 20 that way ;D

For melee there is nothing better than tickling armless prisoners with a 1 dmg awful wooden shiv, just watch the health of the torso since prisoners die sometimes because of 40 cuts to the torso before going down. If you patch them up without medicine you level a lot of medicine too, depending on doctor skill and work speed the prisoner might die due to bleeding out because over 40 cuts take quite a lot of time to be treated. Havent tried this with the increased infection rates though, maybe treating without medicine is a death sentence. I usually do this when I have surplus prisoners and herbal meds.

Force pawns to run with scissors in the snow as their hunting warm-up routine.

Or hand out the red rider bb guns.

Or hunt at night....

Or.............. plant trees, lotsa trees.(This one may be a bit tooooo effective as you'll have to melee everything.)

And Panzer, nice tip there on the melee training. Def gonna give that one a go :)

welcome to today's tortoise torturing session  ;D

Dartonian

I do what Panzer said for melee training, and to train shooting I put down a sleeping spot and target it. It doesn't have HP so it can't break.

Neurotrainers.
They work by applying xp to a skill, so they're best used on colonists with passion in that skill and/or Too Smart.

Shooting is easy enough to train with hunting.

Construction is always the easiest to train for me, without doing any extra effort I end up with level20 constructor or two by the time I build the ship. But if you must really cheese it, construct stone chess tables. 70 stone, over 700 work!

700 work?  :o

Aint that something like 10 minutes straight if your dude isn't higher than 10 skill and you don't fast forward? That's just..... nucking futs man....

But yeah, never had a use for construction skill anyways. Although, the recent change to qualities on beds and stuff does help a bit.

There is a nice firing range mod that basically adds a endless hunting bill. Put hunting as everyone's 4 priority and whenever they have a free moment they go off and plink at cans. You can do the same thing for melee.

And if you're REALLY into grinding, you can deconstruct those tables for something like 2/3 of original resources.

Chess table has base work of 167, stone is harder to work with. 761 work for stone chess table, to be exact.

Well if you really are into grinding you could also go the extra length. Find a place with overhead mountain, cut away a room that will collapse if a pillar in the middle is removed. Get one or more colonists arm them with some decent weapons(for range and speed sake), shoot the single supporting pillar down. Once the room has collapsed, mine out the collapsed area leaving that single pillar once more. Take the stone chunks and make blocks out of them and then finally turn them into chess tables(or perhaps other furniture that can be uninstalled, you know to sell to traders). Rinse and repeat.
