Beauty of smooth rock floor vs stone tiles (granite, marble, etc)

I learned to build stone tiled floors a while ago and noticed they give beauty +2 which is nice compared to the rough rock floors with -1 inside caves.

Today I tried smooth floor for the first time and the tile gets +3 , which is better than granite tile +2, while smooth floor also doesn't take any materials to build.

I don't see the logic. How can it be both cheaper and better? Is there any drawback? Does it take a lot more work to make?

Yes it takes more work, and with the new impressiveness stat, beauty is no longer the importance it was. Smoothed floors add no wealth, while tile floors do.

Huh, I just thought it was an oversight or an imbalance.  Makes sense, I guess, but it's too bad that beauty can't be dependent on the crafter's skill (like furniture & artwork).

How is wealth different from beauty?

I want to increase the mood of my colonists by having a nice floor in the dining room as well as their sleeping rooms.

click on the icon in the bottom right corner, that brings up the room impressiveness stats, and you will see that beauty and wealth are two of the items uses to calculate impressiveness. And it is impressiveness that gives the mood buffs.

There are mood increases and decreases for beauty also, but they do not last all day, and constantly change depending on where the colonist has been.

There are some colonists that require an impressive bedroom. There are some colonists that require a dull bedroom.

I really hate greedy colonists. I've never been able to build a bedroom that's impressive enough for them. Jealous colonists aren't too bad as long as you don't have two of them, but a greedy colonist basically carries a permanent negative mood modifier as far as I'm concerned.

TLHeart

greedy is very easy, large bedroom, excellent bed, carpet, and a statue or two, gets the room to impressive.

We must have different definitions of "very easy". Sure, once the colony is nice and established that might be easy, but I've never lasted more than a year or so.

All depends on what your priorities are. Keeping colonists happy keeps them very productive, as happiness has a direct effect upon global work speed.

Digging into a mountain takes forever, building a large room out of wood is easy.

Defense and food generation kinda take priority over keeping colonists happy, as being dead has a direct detrimental effect upon global work speed.

Well yes and no.
Beauty is still the most important of the room stats, because it applies its own negative modifier, like space. Space is a matter of planning, beauty is a matter of lots and lots of pawn work hours and possibly expensive materials. Low wealth actually increases happiness through the "low expectations" mood buff. And let's not forget that dirtiness actually massively decreases beauty, so that also ties into a room's beauty. I think there is still some balancing that could be done.

For impressiveness, wealth is weighted the most important, then space, then beauty, then cleanliness. Beauty thoughts are a constantly changing modifier, a current thought. The impressiveness is a persistent mood modifier, a memory.

here is what floors do in alpha 12,

Concrete takes 1 steel, has a -1 beauty, and 3 wealth.

Paved Tile takes 2 steel, has a 0 (zero) beauty, and 5 wealth.
Wood floors take 3 logs, have 0 (zero) beauty, and 4 wealth.

Stone floors  takes 4 blocks, have 2 beauty and 10 wealth.
Carpet floors take 7 cloth, have 2 beauty and 11 wealth.
Metal tile takes 5 metal, have 2 beauty and 12 wealth.

Smoothed stone floors have 3 beauty, and 0 (zero)wealth.
Silver Tiles take 85 silver, has 3 beauty, and 90 wealth.
Gold tiles take 85 gold, has 4 beauty, and 1280 wealth.

Beauty is no longer the main factor in rooms. Impressiveness is.
Wealth, space, beauty and cleanliness all are used to figure how impressive a room is, with wealth having the largest impact on the impressiveness.
