Probably not for awhile if it does get added.

I don't think so before a water system is in, which isn't, so not soon anyway.

DNK

Yeah, I'd start with asking, "will there ever be water in the game?" and go from there.

Water's one of the major missing pieces I feel that's left to be added. And what a fundamental piece to be missing...

Water isn't really necessary at all. It would probably just add an annoying layer then better gameplay, which may be one of the reasons it's yet to be implemented. It has to be implemented so that it adds to gameplay instead of just an annoying hurdle.

Why is water an annoying hurdle, yet food is an important gameplay element? I mean even at a basic level, water is more important then food.

I said it has to be implemented correctly. At the moment, you can't actually tell if the map you're on has water, there's no way knowing if it's safe to drink, the only source would be from rain if you landed on a barren map... It's not something that can be added half-ass, it would probably be the main update of an alpha. Also, food is usually more focused on in survival games then water because of stuff like this. Food has a lot more options, since it can be grown or hunted, there's more stuff to do with it.

Take a look at Sheltered, it uses both water and food as important resources. Water is more readily available, but you need it both for sending out expeditions and keeping everyone hydrated, as well as "powering" showers and toilets. Food is more scarce, but easier to stockpile because your need for food does not fluctuate as much as your need for water. It's a great balance IMO, and makes water more than just a different flavor of food.

Well even if what you say abiut Sheltered is true, water would still have a hard time being implemented. I want the process of getting water to be sastifactory, not a more-work-to-do process. What if we choose to land in a 0.0001ml water yearly, no water source desert? And no, turning air into water is probably a dumb idea im that situation too.

"Oh I want to do this but crap, not enough purified water"

Yeah. Like for a big colony, say 30 people, if there was no water on map you'd probably have to have a quarter of your base literally made up of rainbuckets to collect water. Then there's purifying it.

How about bores/wells? I figure you could just add another 'layer' to the map with a water heat map on it that could could toggle on/off. Areas of high water/low water/no water/bad water/LCD laced water/Nano infected water/other cool stuff (as well as rivers? but it could all be underground). Colonist could be allowed/forbidden (forbade?) from different available water sources

You could start with a well, and then transition to a pump, and then some kind of piping system. Plants obviously need water. The kitchen bench could get a requirement/buff for having a water connection (piping). . Colonists would drink from any/closest available water source say twiceish a day. Canteens/animal skins could be carried as gear/clothing, refilled in the mornings and then when ever the opportunity is available, and last about one day. Town wells would be a gathering point like the kitchen tables. It would pay to install a sink in a dinning room, or expensively in each room. The brewing station would require a water connection, and could also use a tainted water source, with the water bring purified (drunk only colonies in the radioactive waste land!!). Obviously you could just purify water other ways, either as a job at the kitchen bench, or en-mass via some kind of purpose built table/object.

Water could be added to the resources list. For example - a colony has a well and as built a water tank. You can set the priority of the tank. Hauling jobs from the water source (in this instance the well, could be a river, or another tank) would be created and colonists would carry water to fill the tank up. Buckets could be buildable at a bench, with maybe carry up to X with the 'welder/axe/pick/now bucket' tool with a buildable bucket being preferred tool carrying a larger amount faster.

Colonists would have to fetch water (note - fetch used to distingiush from hauling) when set to growing, when needed. They would fetch the water from any aviable water source, prefering the closest. Once you got a pump and irrigation system going it would just be as it is now. Except now there is a whole range of new events available - well runs dry; water source contaminated; broken pipe lines etc etc resulting in some 'all hands on deck' situations to get water to plants to feed larger colonies with peopling hauling water to the growers to use (a way to keep unskilled people out, but still helping).

MFW there is another chore for colonist to do

There is a "water table" everywhere on the planet. You can dig wells to access this water table.

In a desert? Yeah, that water table will be rrrrreeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaallllllllllyyyyyyyyyyy far down.

This, of course, is why real-life humans were smart enough to either 1) Not fucking live in deserts, or 2) be nomadic

If you want to settle in a desert, then complain about not having enough water............. well, that is on you. You had the choice to land there.

I think water would be an excellent addition to the game.
