So I just had a thought on an easy and powerful improvement to the game.

Allow colonists to recruit visitors.  And allow visitors to recruit colonists!

When the visitors show up, you can select to chat with them like with any prisoner and your social skilled colonists can try to recruit them.  But watch out, their people are going to talk to your unhappy colonists and try to steal them from you!  It actually would give you a reason to keep your colonists happy so they don't defect and run off with another faction.
If you give an annoying colonist a parka before banishing him to the ice sheet you'll only get a -3 penalty instead of -5.

And don't forget that the pirates chasing a refugee are often better recruits than the refugee is.

Keeping them happy also is cus mental breaks and such. This would have to be if they're extremely unhappy, like mental break unhappy, and some kind of condition so it doesn't happen just whenever you're having trouble keeping them happy.
Selling broken colonist souls for two thousand gold. Accepting cash or credit.

Well preventing mental breaks is too easy.  Just give colonists food, beer, and a hole to sleep in and they do fine.  This would add an additional challenge.  But the odds would be low.  Perhaps something like (100% - mood)^2*(skill/20) so that a visitor with social skill 10 trying to recruit a colonist at 33% mood would have a 5.4% chance of getting him to defect.

And it's easy to respond to -- when the visitors show up, tell all your colonists to run to the fridge to grab some beers.  They'll be unrecruitable if they're drunk and happy :)

(Recruitment of visitors should work the other way around -- the happier they are at your gathering point, the easier they are to recruit.  Beer for everyone!)
