How do you try to make your first 3 colonists?

My ideal start trio would be
High social + cooking
High construction + mining
High medicine + research.

It's a sign of a great game that there are so many play styles; no one 'best' way to play  :)

Poebe

1: Social/Research
2: Medicine/cooking
3: Constructor/miner

All of them are either industrious or hard worker cause those gain joy from working so they dont need to go wander or waste time early on

Robovski

My first 3 get randomized until I have 3 colonists who have nothing in incapable (I might let scary slide for one colonist if they have good traits/stats). I will also randomize if they have anything worse than a scar or are mental/sensitive/hateful/slow/lazy. Otherwise the chips fall where they may.

Shabazza

I re-roll them until I get all three with a meele or ranged skill (at least two with decent values and one with at least the basic ability for one of them).
One colonists must be an excellent doctor.
One colonist must be a good scientist.
One colonists must be a good miner/constuctor.
And I also try to have all three colonists being generally capable of every ability.
Last thing I look for is, to not get negative traits that are clearly problematic for everyday colony life. (abrasive, slow poke, depressive, ...),
or that effectively cripple a colonist without hope. (slothful, lazy, bad back, 96 years old, ...)

I press "random" and then press "play"

Oh the game randomizes them already so actually I just press "play"

I learned that I should probably have at least two people who can fight fires. I now check if at least two people can fight fires.

Going random is hardcore, but I prefer to not waste time on potential non-starters.

Medical/Research
Mining/Construction
Growing/Cooking

I strive to avoid having dumb labor disabled on any of them. I'll take a geezer but when I do they usually catch a bug and die in the first year.

RedPhanthom

I usually try to go for people that don't have restricting body part problems, I usually take 20-40 for the age with a trait that would relate to the biome that I would be making the colony in or if i can get cannibal and psychopath as well.
