I liked the name in abstract, but it just wasn't clear enough what it did.

Pretty much that, I think having to explore the plants that exist was a great idea.

Here's a quick mod (made and tested in 5 minutes) that changes the name back to Xerigium: http://www.mediafire.com/download/q7nr35x3ccq9gbu/Xerigium.7z
It should work with existing saves, as it doesn't change anything else about the plant other than the name.

You can. Just pause the game, select "xergium" as a plant to farm and then click "i" in your farmland/pot.
