Is there an easy way to judge how much food/many meals a colony will need for the non-growing season? Been finding I'm running out by winter a lot, and have to go and hunt heaps to survive.

It would be great if a game element was introduced for these kinds of things, to be able to quantify your needs. Like how Dwarf Fortress requires a bookeeper to accurately track your supplies.

Cannibalism.

But to be safe, try to stock up on as much food as you can before winter hits.
"For you, the day Randy graced your colony with a game-ending raid was the most memorable part of your game. But for Cassandra, it was Tuesday"

u need 1 meal per person per day, and each season is 15 days. Plus u also need food for the animals and more backup till your new harvest matures . Also, indoor farming is a good way to at least break even in those seasonal growing regions.u dont even need hydrophonics for it, ust a sun lamp and soil and heaters to make the greenhouse and enclose the farming region in walls

Hunting literally puts meat on your plate, sending out a hunter every day to bag game is well worth it so long as there are animals to shoot. Bonus in winter: the accidental kills you fail to notice keep longer due to cold temps. If you can't feed your livestock you may want to eat them too. Those who attack your colony can feed your colony too without your turning to cannibalism; raiders carry meals. Just release prisoners to avoid mouths to feed, the fact you are few means you also need less food you are having trouble obtaining.

Another thing that helps those unable to have a sufficient larder to see you through winter and the growing of spring's crop is trade. Many visitors will trade the meals they carry, traders will have similar meals but may have bulk cargo of foodstuffs; if you are really pressed you could attack the caravan. If you set up a trade beacon and radio you might luck into a bulk goods trader but that's a long-shot IMO.

Indoor farming. If you can get hydroponics, having only 1 or 2 vats running rice should be enough to hold you over.

Also consider nutrient paste if you need to squeeze the most out of your supplies.
