Two pawns had weapons of good condition. 1 was level 10 and had a 45% hit chance.

The other was level 8 and had a 15% hit chance.

Big open field so niether one had anything blocking thier shots. No trees rocks or other pawns. and both were as close to the target at eachother.

So why the massive difference? Is level 10 where they can finally shoot straight and anything before that is a crapshoot?

Would love a explanation and even help on the best way to make my guys effective shooters.

Many thanks.

The accuracy depends on the pawns (colonists) Health, Gun Heath, Gun Quality, and then the environment. Check if your pawns are missing like fingers or anything, or if the gun is damaged. A Masterwork gun that is only at 10% health will suck more than an Awful Gun at 100% health.

I think you have accidentally posted this twice.

How is their health? Various health problems could affect shooting, cataracts or a missing arm being obvious examples.

Are they using the same weapon? Different kinds of weapons will have different accuracy at the same range.
Some sort of psychic wave has swept over the landscape. Your colonists are okay, but...
It seems many of the scythers in the area have been driven insane.

You can see a pretty detailed summary of all the factors of shooting accuracy in the character information window (click the "i" icon with character selected)

Of course this doesn't take the environment into account.

can you repair weapons?

If you give an annoying colonist a parka before banishing him to the ice sheet you'll only get a -3 penalty instead of -5.

And don't forget that the pirates chasing a refugee are often better recruits than the refugee is.

You can't repair weapons. Supposedly you can scrap them, though.

In short, you're going to be sucking hard in firefights until you can get enough silver for trade, or push up to components. You'll actually be better off making bow weapons and pilas until you can get rifles that are worth anything.

No, but late game you can salvage them and rebuild new ones.

Scrapping clothes into small bits of cloth would be nice,  as a crafting station job,  done really fast.
Why to people worry about following their heart? Its lodged in your chest, you won't accidentally leave it behind.

Its bad because reasons, and if you don't know the reasons, you are horrible. You cannot ask what the reasons are or else you doubt it. But the reasons are irrefutable. Logic.
