Why colonists do not auto equip weapons?

Having to manually rearm them after every down is an unnecessary chore imo not to mention that weapon can be dropped chort knows where. In DF, dorfs can be assigned a type of weapon to auto equip in uniforms.

I would hate having auto-equip because when a colonist is about to break you don't want them to have a weapon because they will kill everybody.

I almost see it as a blessing that they drop weapons when downed.  Though I usually play on ice sheets and since people tend to lose it at some point and go berserk. I've learned that unless they've got a joywire installed or are usually happy, weapons are on a need only basis.  If there's a raid, everyone gets guns.  During peace times, no one does (except joywired ones).  I've lost too many good colonists because I've forgotten to unequip a weapon and the wielder goes nuts and attacks someone.

Hmm i had never lost a colonist to an armed berserk. Usually nutty pwns a bunch of nearby pets and gets downed. Even if he attacks a fellow, nobody ever died from it. Makes for good combat and medic practice.

I also play mostly Ice sheet and people go crazy all the time. I let them carry guns since they don't use them when they go crazy, but it's important to keep melee people unarmed. I once lost my colony because my best fighter with plasteel gladius went crazy and we couldn't stop him.
